After looking thru a plethra of info on upgrading the factory system I just wanted to get a general opinion on what this can do to the cars resale value.
generally speaking, i don't think people are buying 993s for the stereo. i doubt you can get much extra for upgrading...and you might loose some if you don't have the stock pieces as well when you go to sell.
Usually, the more you spend on a custom radio, the less your car will be worth on resale. For resale keeping it stock is the best. I think I even read that on Panorama or Excellence.
You can make relatively subtle and inexpensive mods that sound pretty good.
I changed my head unit to a cdr220, installed a mid-level amp, K2P's in the front doors and Audio Innovation subs in the back. System sounds amazing and doesn't significantly change the car's appearance. The system would have zero value on resale, but would be easy to remove and return to stock.
IMHO a non-factory/custom audio "upgrade" will not boost the resale value and may indeed lower it.
Especially if it is not reversible and/or the stock factory parts are not included at resale.
However, adding a factory available/optional upgrade such as the Digital Sound Processor and Nokia amp shouldn't have an adverse affect on the resale price.
So, who makes a am/fm/cd/sat radio with a "tasteful" faceplate? For me "tasteful" means black, somewhat symetrical dials/buttons and no flashy multicolored lights.
Tom....I have a model of the Alpine..(CDA 7832) I believe...the face plate kicks up to load a CD..and it is also removable for security....I think it is a fairly clean looking unit...but tastes are different..I'm sure they have something different in their line now, since mine is a couple of years old......

If you an find the Harman Traffic pro its the same as the factory unit. I installed mine in the cabrio, it looks factory and sounds great!

I agree with Danny...and of course it has the navigation also. It might even help the resale value... But no matter what you upgrade I would keep the stock unit just in case IMO. Good luck.
AFAIK neither the TP or TP2 has XM/Sirius capabilities, esp the TP as it is a fairly old unit and hence pretty cheap (if you can still find them).
A plus of the TP is that it works with a phatbox and has both a voice menu interface and also displays a readout of song titles (CDR220 only gives you voice interface with the phatbox).

I have an Alpine CDA-9835 with MP3 capability, XM Radio, iPod interface, Amp and capacitor in the trunk, 2x6.5" JL Subs behind the seats, Focal component fronts, Polk/MOMO rear components, all fit in the factory holes. I always keep my OE equipment, so when I sell the car [hopefully never but if I do], I can replace everything. Hifi Buys will swap out the equipement at no charge when you sell your car provided that they installed it. So will several other places. Get whatever stereo you want and swap it when you sell the car.
Nakamichi makes exceptionally well-designed and excellent sounding decks, and they have a german-OEM look to them. They haven't released a sat-compatible product yet, but their MP3 deck is beautiful and the sound is amazing.
