Default speedo glass

I need glass for my speedo. I called North Hollywood Speedo and they did not really want to discuss just selling me the glass. They wanted me to send the speedo to them for repair. They said the bezel will look like a "sardine can" when I try to close it back up. I know alot of people here have removed the glass for a numebr of reasons, how does the crimp look when it is done? Also any other place to get the glass??

I have not done it but I have heard that, if you are very carefull, you can do it yourself.

Why don't you try a glass shop? There is nothing "Porsche-like" about the glass, and a good glass shop can cut any shape you want. You can even get a piece of tempered or safety glass made.

How much $$ does Hollywood Speedo want for the repair?

Cheers,

Mike

$40 to $50 plus shipping. The only reason I want to do it myself, is the I like to do these types of things. I will check with a local glass shop to see what they have to say.

The only thing special about the glass is that it's single-layer laminated safety glass. During an accident the last thing you want to worry about is eating it.

laminated glass it may be, the inner side of the glass is also coated with some i suspect to be antifoggin materials (which can be easily damaged if washed with water). I have learnt it the hard way, so one of my dials are not fog-free i suppose

Well, my odometer recently died and being the somewhat self initiated type, I set about to replace the plastic gear that BS911 details in his DIY.

I would take Hollywood speedo's word on getting the trim ring off. I don't know how they do it, but if your goal is to have it look OEM from the back side, good luck.

This is an exercise in damage control. Once its put back together, the rubber gasket will cover your work, so its not all for loss, just understand that it will be apparent that the gauge face has been removed.(looking from the rear)

Keep us posted.

Just an update, I decided to send my speedo to NH speedo to get the lens replaced. The lens is not glass it is actually plastic! After they told me the lens was plastic and not glass (of course I thought they were wrong) I took my speedo and scratched the lens with a paperclip. It is gong to be replaced anyway so no big loss. Just figured I would let you guys know.

Jason,
Does the 964 have a trip meter reset coming throught the glass? They said since the 993 has the odo reset button coming throught the lens it has to be plastic?????

Ya it does and I just tried the scratch method and you're right it does leave a mark. Try scratching (or thumping with your finger) all the other gauges (mine are all glass), so it's just the speedo on the 964/993 that is plastic? My fuel and oil level gauge started delaminating at the top left quarter so I just pulled the plastic off the glass and (a few months later) I did a proper replacement.

I received my speedo back from North Hollywood Speedo. The crimp looks very nice and they replaced the plastic lens with real glass. They said they have glass faces cut for them and drill the hole for the reset. It cost $45 for parts and labor. You can not tell the speedo has ever been touched. I am very pleased with the level of cucotmer support and finished detail.

I also sent mine to North Hollywood Spedo for repair. Very pleased with the trunaround and the results. I would not try a DIY. I think they are right, the backside of the gauge will look cobbed up. Not really a big deal unless some totally **** buyer gets scared off if it were discovered during a PPI.

very very very surprised to hear that our gauges are plastic...? are you sure? when i tap on mine it sure sounds like glass, and i have many micro-swirls on the gauges from where the original owner tried to clean them with a non-micro fiber towel i guess...

was trying to find the right product to get out the fine scratches.. if its plastic, will need to take a different approach

Mr. Sullivan. Like it was said above, if you have a speedo with the mechanical push-to-reset odo coming trhough the "glass", it's really plastic and if you look carefully you will find it to possibly have more microscratches than the other gauges due to this.
