Just browsed the completed items under "Porsche 993" and noticed that not a single car met it's reserve. Turbo's, S's, and NA's alike, none of them sold. Hopefully and probably, this means nothing as Ebay is only a small portion of where most of these cars are sold anyhow. Actually, this was good information for me as a prospective seller as I probably won't list my car on Ebay now.

I think ebay gets the car exsposure,......and pehaps the deal is made.after the auciton is over?....saving the ebay fees?

I have been following eBay for the last two months and you are totally right...95% of the cars are not reaching reserve price...I don't think it's a matter of setting a high reserve just to escape the "eBay transaction fee" as it is just $40 regardless of final price...in my opinion, the lack of deals is due to the fact people prefer to play safe and get the 993s within the "Porsche world"...well...there are probably a bunch of overpriced babies there as well...

eBay Motors is plagued with deluded bottom-feeders who think they are going to get a Porsche for a Yugo price. Also as Phil said, some deals are made after the auction closes--I sold my Boxster that way.

I sold my 928 this way. It worked out better as I had significant contact with the buyer and was comfortable knowing I wouldn't get hosed.

The auction fees had to be paid regardless of whether the car sold or not.

Also, the e-bay cars more often have a "history", or no history. Don't know which is worse.

Think of eBay as a classified ad. Most cars are sold during or after the auction. I have found it to be very effective, certainly better than Cars.com and Autotrader. That being said, the bottom-feeder comment is correct. You are just looking for the one or two motivated non-bottom feeder buyers.

I think it's a case of the cars being overpriced. Unless you're an enthusiast that's looking for the last, best air-cooled 911, you're not going to pay more for a 993 than is currently being asked for a 996! The latter has more power, pretty much the latest technology, and is cheaper. If you're shopping for a 993, that won't matter, but if you're just shopping for used Porsche it's a big deal.

after a brief period of insanity evaluating the merits of the 996 40th anniv, i am in love with my car all over again...

up at the local porsche dealership today to purchase some goodies, i came outside to a salesman circling my car... i walked up and he said "oh my god this is going to be such a classic someday..."

I think many of you are right when you say that cars often sell during the auction or after. That has to be partly true since a lot of the ending prices are no where near what the cars are typically worth, IMO, and from my personal evaluation of the current market.

Tony: As for what I'll be replacing my 993 with, the answer is probably nothing for the time being. Reality, married life, having kids, has really opened my eyes as to what is most important to me right now, and unfortunately, the 993 just can't be one of them. I know someday, there will be another time for me to have a Porsche or other toy but right now it doesn't make a whole lot of sense financially. I'll have to make do with my new Mitsubishi Evolution MR for now, which quite frankly, is a load of fun too. If however, the car doesn't sell, I won't be too disappointed.
