OK, how does a whole get ripped in the upper engine air duct?

Usually the broken pieces just go one way - downwards! When I replaced mine, I fished around with a flashlight and "grabber" tool when the old one was off just to make sure all the little pieces of rubber that had fallen in the cowling were removed.
Also, it takes a little coaxing to fit on the "box" on the left but otherwise easy.
Good luck.

Wow, that's some hole!!
I accidently put a clean rip in mine when I was wrestling with the housing replacing my alternator ...just a strip of gaffers tape "fixed" it. But tha's some chunk of rubber missing!

Mine ripped too, though there wasn't a gaping hole there, it would just flap when the car revved and the fan sped up. I have no idea what happened, because I had been in there a few days before it happened. Cheap (as noted above, relative to Porsche) and quick to replace.

I'm curious - wonder if there's any relationship to early failure of the duct and having the engine tray off. Mine's off; how about the others with cracked/broken ducts?

There is a lot of positive pressure (especially at high rpms) behind that piece of rubber and as previously said, heat and age take their toll on the rubber.
That's my .2 cents anyway.
I seriously doubt it was due to bird ingestion or any other FOD type scenario.

Mine was very dry and brittle. It did not survive my recent alternator replacement. Note to MY95 owners - the part number is 964 106 403 03. The 993 106 403 00 part number started in late build 95s and from there on.

Ordered my replacement part today from Sunset -- only $34, but they said they were out of stock -- order could take about 2 weeks. I should have figured this one out right when I noticed it -- and ordered right away -- I'm startin' to procrastinate like I were back in college.

I just noticed this on mine as well......is it OK to drive while the repair is 'pending'?
FYI in regards to the engine tray qustion, I just had mine taken off 500 miles ago
Thanks all.....

Mine was broken when I got my car (tray was on). When I installed the new one, it was a bit of a strech to get it to attach. Combine this with the air pressure from the fan and that the cast rubber piece is not very well done (many non radiused inside edges) and it is not surprising that it fails. I must say that was a good sized hole. Wish there was a video of that catastophic event.
