Default realistic power limits for NA 993?

I am just wondering what are the power limits with a modest budget for the 993 NA cars. What options for more power are there.

I ask because I am considering a 930 within the next few years, partly due to the power potential. I also love the 993 cars, but the lack of power puts me off a bit. Either car I get will be a very long term ownership.

any info is appreciated thanks

The general consensus is that, unless you open your wallet up REALLY wide, power gains will be minimal at best to the NA motor. With a modest budget, a chip would give you a nicer hp/torque curve. A LWF would give you better throttle response. Regearing would also help in the fun factor. The beauty of our 993's is the balance.

Hello 2000wrx,

Nice to see you here. Welcome!

The general idea with Porsche is endurance. So within the concept, their engines are built to a relatively high tune level. 3.6 liters with 285 HP is quite ok and don't forget these cars were built 10 years ago. Performance is good; a C2 will go to 60 mph in a shade over 5 seconds. Total HP does not look big but the torque lasts a long time. LWF/RS clutch plus a shorter regear would be my choices...

Oh I forgot... I have that already

Thumbs up

Sell the 993 and buy a Twin Turbo. You'll get more than power then.

car designer = not rich

993TT well out of the price range of this poor guy lol

That is why I have been researching the 930's a lot. It is very hard to figure out what you want from a Porsche without having first hand exp. You always run the risk after purshce of, "I wish I..."

I am trying to research as much of that out as I can since my purchace is still quite a ways off.

Welcome to Rennlist!
Drive all the 993's you can, then drive all the 930's you can. This will speak volumes.
Stop light to stop light, sounds as though you'll like the 930. However, if you ever venture out to a track for some spirited driving, you will definitely absolutely love the 993. Like others have said, dont demand more power, demand performance

hey 2000wrx i'm in the same dilema with you but am leaning towards the 993. the lines of the car are just so great and porsche definitely makes good use of the power it has from the factory so I don't think you'll be totally disspointed. Remember even a stock 993 will do close to 170mph. I've never had the opportunity to drive one but from what I hear they are some of the most fun cars to drive available to everyday people.

I am thinking about a supercharger with the intercooler then you are talking about 100 added horses. I would definitly install the intercooler due to the excess heat created and those heads can only take so much....

I plan on the car to be a stong street/trackday car... I know the 930 tends to be very... uum raw on the track... like you say I will have to try to drive them when I am close to purchase. Good luck trying to find "test drives" I bet lol.

I had thought about some of the "big bore" motor options, I kinda like the idea of a lightweight NA car, I would think that 350+HP from 3.6+L is fairly easy doing... with a sub 2700lbs car that =

you mean the 3.8 liter conversion, right? What is your idea of "easy" What is your price limit?....cause it ain't cheap!!!!!....and you won't get 350hp....and if you do, you are looking at rebuilding the engine every 40ish hours??

cheap, fast, reliable. Choose any two!

Drive one 930 then drive a 993 C2. I know which car you'll choose. Peak HP don't count for much.. torque does it better.

Start by driving some before deciding what mods you want to do. You will be very surprized. Porsche has been the top sport car for 50 years. How did they manage to stay there?? They deliver the goods.

I have 319 hp on tap on my -94 993 Carerra (without Varioram).

I have new camshafts, 100 cell Racecats, Modified mufflers, Sports intake with K&N filter, GT3 flywheel.

Everything was tuned in a bench with an additional box inbetween the ECU and Engine.

Price??? Was not that expensive (i did it at the same time i rebuilt the valve guides) I guess something like 3500 Euro

The engine is much torquier on high revs, pulls nicely all the way to the redline!!!

Really satisfied with this mod.

Hi Porschedriver

Would be interested to see the power / torque curves, and know what cams were used. No head work ?

cheers, Maurice

"and you won't get 350hp....and if you do, you are looking at rebuilding the engine every 40ish hours??"

Are all Porsche engines this fragile? 350HP from 3.8ish liters isn't asking to much IMO.

But I do agree that its more about power under the curve that peak numbers. Though deep down I still think that a 993 will be out of my price range. They seem to be building steam rather than slowing down these days.
