Default Replacement Key Fob?

My "new to me" 1997 cab came with only a single key and electronic key fob. I am concerned about having only 1 key fob, since I understand that the ignition kill can only be overided with this device. A local dealer quoted me $152 for a new one, plus $80 in service fees for programming the device. Is this reasonable? Is there any place to purchase a new fob outside of the dealership, and can it be programmed without the dealer?

Thanks for any help.

Kirk

Only the dealer can do it so there is a bend over factor at hand...I am sorry...

Thanks for the response. I figured that would be the case.

You can check on ebay for the keyless remote. I've seen them sell for 1/2 of what you were quoted.
Or check with Sunset Porsche for parts to the public IIRC at dealer cost + 10%. But as stated above you'll have to get the dealer to program it.

The dealer can supply the fob but there is no reason you cannot program it......look at the search feature and I am sure somebody has covered before. Before you can do it you need to know the coded number Porsche gave to your computer....ask the P garage they should be able to look it up for you FOC....once you have this you can program your new key fob....incidentally when I bought my new one two months ago it was $189 from Tischer .... yours sounds a bargin in comparison

It is available for much less money. Also, there are self-programming instructions on-line. I can't find them at the moment, but start here:

I bought two of the remotes some while back to try and add the remote to my "new to me" '95 cab. Turned out the keyelss entry system wasn't fitted to this model year (but I added a 3rd party remote option anyway to the alarm unit).

I have two of the remotes available if anyone wants them. They aren't in too bad a shape (they aren't brand new!).

I'll ask $45 each (below what I paid!) including shipping. PM me if you are interested.

(first option goes to KirkM though, as he started the thread)

You do need the four digit "immobilizer code" from the dealer though... just visit them with your car and the VIN and they should be able to get this info for you. P-Car.com has the DIY as has been pointed out.

Clive,

That is a very generous offer. Thank you for keeping the Rennlist spirit alive and well.

Hope KirkM takes you up on it.

Thanks, Clive! I will be taking you up on the offer (you have a PM).

A related question regarding the code - the books that came with my car have a handwritten note in the radio manual which says "CODE" with a 4 digit number next to it. Since it is in the radio manual, I am assuming that this is the radio code. Does anybody know if this by chance is the same as the key code, or are they 2 different codes?

And thanks for the help. I've only recently registered as a member (doesn't appear yet with my name), but i've already gotten some great and valuable information.

Kirk,

Two different codes. The Radio and Immobilzer have different numbers...

Marc and Kirk have both expressed interest and at this point, both keyfobs are spoken for.... Boy, was that a fast turnaround!

Just glad to help a few others and return some of the goodwill this board has given me.

Cheers!

Clive.

1. As said, if you are patient, you can buy a remote on eBay inexpensively. I picked up a 3rd one as an extra to keep hidden in my car for under $50, but waited several months for the opportunity.
2. If you have the 4 digit immobilizer code for your car, you can program your own remotes. Just follow the directions found in your Owners' Manual, on p-car.com, or in the archives. Convoluted, but doable. I've now done it several times & it gets easier w/experience. There's no need to pay your dealer, although some dealers will do it at no added charge if you buy the remote from them.

Damn..I always get late to these posts!

I am in the same boat as KirkM. So if anyone else has extra remotes that want to sell, PM me.

After reading a post from VentoGT that got locked out of his car with the car running...I'll have nigtmares until I can get a second set of keys/remote.
