What is the first year that OBD II was used on a 911?

What's the purpose for being able to start the car without pushing in the clutch though? And why do you have to have your hand on the gearshift if it's already sitting in 1st gear before you get into the car? Couldn't you start the car with either hand on the key, your other hand on the wheel, and nothing on the gearshift? Just let out the clutch and go?
I guess either interpretation makes plausible sense.

I'm with Chris on this one. I too, have loved the Lemans-type starts. I first got exposed to them watching Speed Racer as a kid. If you go to the factory, the left-hand key story enevitably comes up. What a great story!

Nikon--as Mark said, Steve is the man for that question--as far as I know the pre-96 cars had "clip in" chips that could be snapped in and out...after MY95, they were soldered on. I also seem to recall that for some reason the MY96 computer is a PITA to make a chip for....Steve will speak up soon I'm sure...just figured I'd add my $.02 because it's a boring day at work and I wanted to do something remotely productive

But normally aspirated 993 are OBD1 as mentioned w/ the late OBD2 diagnostic plug
I have a '97 M64/21 in my garage, No SAI, no holes in the head or ports, single oxygen sensor, 55 pin harness, OBD1 compliant
In need of a Hammer substitute

Can anyone chime in here. I have a ROW 96 C2 and was under the impression that these models not having to comply with the strict Californian rules do not have the ports through the heads which are the root of of your problems. If that is the case, do I have an OBDI or an OBDII, meaning I can chip my car like a '95. Where's Viken when you need him.

I have never seen a '96 ROW DME but according to the manuals it is the same for '96 on. My '97 has a socketed chip

I wonder if anyone has ever done enough research to tell if there are more '95 993s that have had catastrophic valve failure due to bad guides than later models... more to the point, is the OBD-II, although annoying as hell, providing non-'95 owners a warning of potential valve-guide problems well before a catastrophic failure is likely to occur?
Maybe I'm just trying to find the upside of the fact that my SAI ports are clogged up like a bypassed artery.
