Im upgrading the stereo on my TT. The components that Im replacing are:
Head unit with ipod interface, front 3-way speakers, amp under passenger seat.
The rear speakers will remain stock (no install) and be powered by the head unit.
What should this require in hours of labor? or, what should this cost?
Ive gotten quotes of upto $2000 for just labor and i almost fell off my chair.
It would seem to be a straight forward install w/o much fabrication.
Anyone have a good and fair stereo installer in the nyc/tristate area?

$2K just for the install? Thats insane!
The Finishing Touch in Morristown do good work, they did the stereos on all my previous p-cars, haven't had a chance to get something done to this one yet. Telephone number is (973) 538-3111 - they do alot of stereo work on 911s via High Marques.

I would say 200 is fair. The real problem is the stupid amp. That is where you run into major cut and splice. That is a serious time consumer. You may have to run new wires to all the speakers. I dunno. $2000 is far to expensive.

Hi,
This is what I did a month ago and the quality is unbelievable.
Front speakers: Focal polykevlar 165K2
Rear speakers: Boston (not important but you must change the paper nokia's)
Amp: Soundstream Van Gogh 500.4
Bass: Infinity Bazooka
Head unit: Alpine
If you do this you have a high end stereo system!
Ps.If you want I have some pictures.
Total cost with installation : 2900$
Regards

I did the speakers myself (very..very easy). Then I had the senior installer at one of the local premiere car audio shops do the head unit ($35) and eclipse amplifier ($85), I bought all the components on ebay.

When I had a Traffic Pro installed and the rear speakers replaced it cost me about $70 for the installation. Of course the shop owner in Brewer, Maine had rebuilt and drives a beautiful 911 SC.

$2000 is preposterous! It sounds like you are being gouged because you have a highline vehicle. Shouldn't be more than $500 at the absolute, absolute, absolute highest just for labor! More like $200-300 IMO. If you were closer to me, I'd help you do it for free.

Depending on how the work is done, it may not be out of line. If you just want to cut wires and holes, it doesn't take much. If you want to do it right, it takes a lot more work. My amp and crossovers are mounted on a custom fab'd and powder coated 'crossmember/strut bar' type affair that mounts to existing bolts. The tweeters did'nt fit in the stock pods, so the guy made some that closely match the look of the stock ones in fiberglass.
Everything is hidden and looks stock from all appearances. I have suffered MANY breakins with prior vehicles as I've always had high end systems (yes, even though they were alarmed), and didn't want it with the 993.
It takes time and work, and if you want it done right "it'll cost you."

VERY similar to Delanobe above:
I replaced head unit w/ Alpine (with XM and iPod), all new speakers in doors and rears (MB Quarts and Focals) and Rod Birch's custom sub enclosures with 2 8" JL Audio subs and under-seat amp ALL for around $2,500. Install was $400 at SoundAdvice.

Back when I was in college, and for quite a few years afterwards, I was a car audio installer. Worked on dozens of 911s at the shop. It's been well over 10 years since I did it for a living, and I could still do that job in a few hours, at most.
$2000 is insane. I'd love to know how they came up with that one.

$2000 would be appropriate only if the install included MDF custom sub enclosures (i.e. in the footwell or behind the rear seats) incl the subs, custom amp rack, and custom head unit mounting (i.e. custom center console for NAV unit. etc).
For your install $250-$400 would seem more appropriate.

Looks like you are getting the "Porsche Price".
Move on from these guys and find a reputable dealer selling the equipment you want.
I ran into this recently on a sprinkler system failure at my house. All was cool until the spinkler guy went into the garage to access the control panel and saw the 993......... Suddenly rates went up and he became very, ahem, "Professional".
Like I said, move on and find somebody else.
For round numbers, p-carfan has good approximations.
HTH,
Scott
