Default 4 Days, 675 miles and guess what?

On the fourth day of ownership and 675 miles after receiving my 1998 C2S that damn check engine light came on solid when I turned the ignition key on first thing in the morning on it's 5th day. The vehicle sat the evening before in my garage, no obvious signs to signal me why when I went to start the car up in the morning. The light stayed on after a couple of on/offs during my drive into the office. I have read about the OBDII code reader online here and drove directly to Kragen to pick one up! Have not had the opportunity to diagnose yet, because I am having eight miniscal compression dings repaired, and the car detailed by Newman Company in Napa. Thanks Doug and crew for pointing out body dings which I would not have noticed. These guys really do pay attention to every detail! Anyway, I will be picking the car up tonight and have to ask the question , where do you connect the code reader to? This whole situation really bums me out. I need some incouragement. Is this what the slippery slope is all about?

You'll find a plastic cover on driver's side of the center console that says "OBD" on it. Just pop the cover off and the connector is right there.

I hate to say this but I would suspect that anyone who is selling a 96-98 993, and knows about the cel issue, will disconnect their battery for a few hours before the show the car. (Prior to sale.) I'm certainly not saying this is the moral thing to do. If the seller is knowledgeable about these cars, and the car's CEL is on, this is an easy way to avoid the issue. The only way to check if the problem exists is to have a dealer check all the codes.

Here in New York, our new emissions testing can tell if the battery has been recently disconnected. If it has, and the NYS computer does not get full code information, and the shop will tell you to drive the car and bring it back after a fully cycle. This is a big bummer. My CEL light is on and I know it is for the SAI. The car runs beautifully. I don't want to spend the 3-5K to fix it. I have till September to make a decision.

Mine was two days and 178 miles. The PO claimed he had never seen the CEL.

O well.

Good luck.

Randy,

If you don't mind me asking... what was the cause of your CEL light coming on?

Very disappointing. I have a smog check due (my 2nd since purchased) that I hope to get through with no problems. Then I can breathe easy.... for the time being.
Let us know what the OBDII code comes up as.
And no, fortunately the "slippery slope" is not the unforeseen problem/repair.
The spirit of the "slippery slope" is the irresistible desire to enhance your 993 ownership experience.
Best of luck and keep us posted.

Ha, mine was 35 miles, 1 hour later, the moment i pulled into my driveway. Consider yourself lucky! Actually, i wasn't worried as the SAI issue on my car had already been taken care of and the code was for an O2 sensor. Good luck with your car though. Definately get an OBDII reader so you can check those codes yourself and avoid giving yourself a heart attack every time that dreaded light comes on. Good luck!

Mine was about three weeks and 1000 miles later after buying in March this year, ASG kindly looked at codes and said SAI, when I was taking it to them a week later for several things including LFW and RS Clutch and oil change, the light went out, go figure, but we had agreed to do the SAI check valve anyway, its was found to be well gunked up on removal.....drove the car another 50 miles light came back on....huh...I dont burn any blue smoke during high revs or when the car sits and idles. Since I have to have an emmisions checked by July 17th I guess it will be going back to ASG for further investigation and help !! What a pain !!

Thats all you did, disconnect for an hour (presume this clears all codes) then drive at high revs for an hour? What does this do? And why does it cure the issue?

My light came on several times after about 500 miles. The code showed random misfires. I cleaned the ISV and it never came back.

I think with all the high rev it caused some of the carbon to be cleaned up these cars really enjoy the revs like no other.

hmmmmm, I seldom get chance to do any real sustained high revs....unless I sit in second gear all the way to work! Fuel consumption would then be the issue...hahahaha
