Default Varioram conversion...how complicated and expensive?

How complicated and expensive would be to convert a 1995 car to the Varioram intake manifold system? Not a big difference as far as hp but I heard the mid range torque gets a big increase...

Thanks for the feedback...

This has been covered extensively in the past. Search....not worth it.

chip, lwf, re-gear and if you still want more power, 3.8 upgrade or supercharger.

That is pretty much the standard line from past threads.

Pedro,

I agree w/ the above. That mod alone would not be worth it, IMHO. How's the search going?

Hi Pedro:

IMHO, its not a simple project and the returns are very limited compared to the other suggestions that "Father of 3" offered.

The only regime where it makes more torque is from 2000-4500 RPM. Beyond that, there is little or no difference.

I would do the easy bolt-ons, install close-ratio gears, and perhaps check & correct the cam timing as that accounts for the majority of the HP variances we see in these cars. After that, I'd suggest a set of RS cams and RS intake valves. When the engine needs to be totally rebuilt, you might consider the 3.8 P/C's as long as you're there,...

Steve-

What are the performance gains in terms of torque/hp from the RS cams and intakes?

Thanks,

Peter

There is a 96 motor on ebay for 8k or something....you will need the wiring harness, etc. also and I am sure steve could chime in with other needed parts.

i have done a varioram conversion to my 94, its a relatively simple job, i suggest you talk to Steve at timmins@udel.edu, who has been of immense help in my conversion.

i like the conversion, esp if you do a lot of city driving, significantly better down low torque, but the original heater box on the left side will not fit...

I though about this, then decided it would be easier to sell my car and get a later one, but decided againt that too.

At the risk of sounding completely stupid: Apart from the fact that I can hear a definite primal scream coming from the engine at WOT, what exactly does the varioram do? Is it simply allowing/forcing more air in to the system?? I've never really heard anyone explain it very well....

Matt:

Varioram is a variable geometry intake system. Its comprised of vacuum-operated intake stacks that change length depending on RPM.

Longer intake runners are optimal for low & mid-range torque; short runners are optimal for higher RPM power. The V-Ram intake system changes runner length using telescoping stacks at 5200 RPM (therabouts).

The "scream" you hear is a combination of the intake stacks changing length and the resonance chamber flap opening up,....
