Anyone with a 84 and newer Carrera should have a spare DME relay in the glovebox. Ask me how I know...!

I don't carry a spare remote battery but did replace it as soon as I bought my car. Available just about anywhere, but that dang special battery for the key light can't be found anywhere but the stealership.

Gotta have that DME relay (make sure you get the 93 part no and not the original 944 item!!).

But Tim, now that you have used your spare - you've bought a new spare, right?

Had the same thing happen to me only I was at a gas station. Good one minute dead the next.
Wish I could find one for $20. My local dealer offered me one for $55 with PCA discount a few weeks ago. Got it at a auto parts store for $30.

$24 at Pelican. Probably cheaper at Sunset.

Yes I will be ordering a new one right now and decided to see what the current going rate is in the UK. Here is what I found www.design911.co.uk £25.95 plus VAT and delivery. www.type911.co.uk £18.00 plus VAT and delivery. www.porscheshop.co.uk £18.80 plus VAT and delivery. www.berlyn-services.co.uk £14.50 plus VAT and delivery. www.carnewal.com 18.50 Euros plus tax and delivery.

As you can see some people attempt to operate on bigger margins than others and it is not just on small stuff like a DME relay! Bert at berlyn is a good guy with keen prices, but Gert will be getting the order as a Rennlist sponsor with the best service you can imagine and keen prices.

Tim,

What was the part # on the failed unit? I had a 944 # on mine when I bought my car and immediately replaced it w/ the 933 # part. I have the 944 part as my spare, but am wondering if that is a good idea or not, seeing that it's the 944 #'s that fail. Anyone have a 993# relay fail on them, yet?

Kelly good point. I have just been and retrieved the failed relay from the garage as I had not yet thrown it away. The relay is the 944 item part number 944.615.227.00 would be interesting to know if anyone has had a 993 item fail.

Tim - The 993 relays are also prone to failure, but at a MUCH reduced rate over the 944 part number. From what I see at the shop it is about 5x greater failure rate for the 944 number.

Wouldn't be great we could just change a relay to get rid out carbon deposits issue.

But Bob, have you folks tried any other less invasive procedure to deal with the carbon deposit issue. I read the DIY on cleaning the port, but another fix or procedure short of taking the head off.
