Default Does a 993 96 and newerTiptronic expert exist????

...so last year we did 2 fluid changes on my 96 Tiptronic.. just because of all the track time it sees... thought it would be good to do...

Anyway.. ever since that 1st change, it seems to leak out of nowhere when it gets very very hot at a track session.... (not every time we go to the track either...) ... we can never find where it could possibly be leaking from.. because it is obvioiusly NOT the gasket... ..and there is no apparent source...

..and it is never bad enough to drip on the ground but is on the covers and coating the bottom of the car and lots of nasty dirt/dust mix in...

..and meanwhile, the HOT operating temperature still always shows within limits so we have not yet added anything...

My questions are:

Is there some sort of overflow we are not seeing for when it gets overly hot at the track?

Is it possible we overfilled it so it is leaking out now due to overfill when too hot? ..but where??

Is there a Tiptronic expert? Specificly for a 96 model which supposedly is different from 95 but the service manual gives contradictary info...

...and no one seems to know a lot or enough about the tiptronic and even less bother to take it to the track...... ARG!!

Anyone????

Hmmm...what fluid did you use. I had big problems when I used Swepco in my BMW. It was supposed to be the hot stuff to use. After replacing the seals twice in the trans, Red Line oil was the only way to go.

Now this was a manual trans but seal compatability could be the issue.

Let us know...I have an Audi that needs Tiptronic fluid service soon.

Good luck!!

Maybe fbfisher knows... after all, he was happy to tell the old guard to go **** themselves, and thinks tips are great. I'm sure he must have all the answers. Who needs Viken?

I used standard Dextron III (which is what replaced dextron II) ..non-synthetic.... as I read iffy reviews on synthetic on the tip...

...hoping someone here has an answer...

From my experience you can have fluid leaking from other places. Transmission leaks are a pain to troubleshoot. You have to clean the unit very good and watch for the very translucent flow of fluid. The first place to check is your pan gasket, but you have checked that. Next is the siteglass area? On the drivers side of the case, above the halfshaft flange, is the trany vent.. If your level is high or low and the Dextron is foaming you will push oil out this vent...

As far as your level, I would not trust the site gauge, it is very dependant on temp. The factory recommends checking it with the hammer to find the exact level. With the doubt that may exist, it might be wise to make a trip to your local dealer to give you piece of mind.

Being that I hate the way Porsche has designed the site glass. Years ago after getting the fluid checked to make sure the level was perfect, I drained the fluid and replaced the filter. I measured the exact amount of fluid that was in the pan, and what dripped out during the process. I put the exact amount back in.

did you notice it low on the site glass after filling the same exact amount back in?

My level: at street temperature warm, it is at the lowest mark for 50 degrees Celcius but still spills and makes a mess after extended track use (40 minute session).... 20 minute session means no problems.

Fear on our side is the the fill level at the track (when it stops leaking out the vent) is too low for the street when the fluid is not expanded as far.

Anyone have any insight into this.

Yes, it fills low. Fluid expands as it warms, you know that, getting the happy medium is what you need to find. You might want to think about adding a 2nd cooler on the left side of the car, to keep the heat down.
