I bought my 993 from a high line dealer and had a great experience. Yes, I paid a bit of a premium for the car but, other than my own track mods, I have not had to perform any surprise repairs. I know that some here have snagged bargains only to pay for the price of entry further down the hall of ownership.

My first P-car was an '85 Carrera that I bought from a private party. It was a less than positive experience mostly because the shop that did the PPI was, IMHO, in cahoots with the owner and did not disclose all of the issues it should have. I learned much from that experience.

In order of preference, this is how I would buy a 993...

1. From a Rennlister
2. From a local PCA member
3. From a specialty dealership (examples: RPM, Premier, etc.)
4. From an individual private owner

I think ideally you should buy from a Porsche-lover...those can be found on this board and in your local PCA community. It should be pretty quick to check classifieds for both. I would then turn to the specialty dealers...they tend to (usually) have pretty clean examples and there is plenty feedback on this board for various dealers so that you can avoid pitfalls. Personally, I put an auto-trader, individual-type search at the very bottom of my list. Tried that for awhile and learned that it was a ton of work...researching and researching, dealing with all types, neglected cars, etc. I am by no means rich, but I determined that the extra $5-10k I might spend to get a super clean example easily was worth the money over months of headaches... just one opinion.

well reasoned advice
but
also consider that the sellers in the first three categories will often have an "inflated" perception of the cars value as [YOU] noted and were willing to pay.
Not all of us are either willing or able to do so.

one persons "neglected" car is another persons hobbyist jewel.

be safe

We bought our first Porsche, 68 912 Coupe from a friend. bought my 80 SC Targa from a private party, BUT, it was a customer car of the mechanic we took the 912 to, so we had a complete history on the car. If you can get a car with a known history, whether it is via a Rennlister, a friend or mechanic, that is probably the best way to go. Dealers can offer warranty, but that is no gurantee that the car won't have problems, just that they will be paid for under certian circumstances. Private party purchases require more patience to find the right car, but I think they will provide you with the best price. There may be some security in buying from a dealer, but you will likely pay a premium as well. for me, part of the fun was the hunt. Not to mention doing a bunch of research, like you are doing, Rennlist is one of the best resources to get information, as well as look for cars, as owners are constantly changing cars.

Good Luck in your search.

Dontcha hate it when you do a search and accidentally reply to a two year old thread?

But since it's come back from the dead, let me say that I almost wish I spent ~$10k more on the pristine, low miles, dealer car. At least with dealers, you know their priorities and that their approach is ultimately rational. Private sellers can be completely unreasonable, especially when you consider that enthusiast owners are about 5%, where Zaino and gold chain owners (oil level, what oil level? I wipe it with a diaper, so it's well maintained) are about 95%, even with 993s.

Jeez. I was avidly reading those auction prices, too. Too bad they're two years old ... LOL
