LSD friction plates ....
I was told by Porsche dealer that if I wanted to replace the friction plates in the LSD I would have to pay 1800 or so and buy the whole unit. Motorsports was 2500 or so. Where can I get the friction plates and how much? I was told by the dealer they would not sell the plates alone.
I found 4 plates with about 5k on them for sale, bc the guy went with the motorsports version. I rather get new ones and the guy has not set a price yet which scare me, since he knows how much the dealer wants for them.
Steve indicated the motorsport were drop in plates, so where I can get those rather than spending 2500 on the entire unit.
TIA.

Hi David:
Let me clarify that the main difference between the Motorsport or Guard LSD's and the OEM 993 one lies with the number of plates, not the kind they are.
Your 993's LSD has 2 plates per side: the Motorsport and Guard ones have 4 plates per side and that makes a HUGE difference.
It doesn't matter what plates you install in the 993's LSD, they simply wear out very quickly and these do require frequent attention to maintain optimum handling.
FWIW, Motorsport LSD's are usually around $ 1800 and the Guard ones are $ 2100. Installation & setup, extra of course.
(Now, you know whats funny? Porsche uses that same blasted cheap 2-plate LSD in the GT-3's)

There is no room to install everything; the clutch "baskets" will not hold everything.
If a person wants the 4-plate LSD's, the only options are the Guard or Motorsports ones.

Eric,
Wouldn't 2 plates per side = 4 plates?

The dealer parts catalog lists three plate packages and associated parts for rebuilding the 993 LSD.
N-950-332-983-00 25%/65%
N-950-332-983-01 22%/40%
N-950-332-983-31 40%/65%
N-950-332-983-02 gear set
N-950-332-983-06 pin set
N-950-332-983-05 ring set
N-950-332-983-03 screw set
If these discs are just going to wear out in 30k miles like the originals then I don't know what good it would be to use them but they are available. Would it be possible to install the parts from a 964? They can last for 100k miles and you don't have the tire wear issues like I've heard you can have with the guard LSD.

I had the plates replaced in my 993 RS last year, the guy who services my car contacted Porsche Motorsport dept who were out of plates at the time...they kindly modified a set of GT3 Rs plates to fit..the parts side of things came to about $500...

LSD Q's:
Eric:
The 993 LSD's have 2 plates per side; total of 4. Earlier LSD's have 4 plates per side; total of 8.
Martin:
Some '95's had the older 964 4-plate LSD's but most '95 and all '96-'98 cars had the 2-plate ones.
Jason:
Guard LSD's usually come set at 80% and thats why they can be hard on tires. When we use these in street cars (and most track cars) we reset them to 40% and they are MUCH better.
