Default Cross post..My Big Fat Turbo Install

When buying OG's TT we noted that the left turbo was starting to leak. Being ****...I took it upon myself to change it out soon after getting the car and crawling around under it...staring at the turbo. I am NO mechanic...but with Kevin's instructions (sticky) and support, and Pauls help, I took out the turbo....sent to Kevin for a rebuild, and reinstalled it ALL BY MY SELF!!!! As you can tell...very proud. All said and done in 2 weeks exactly.....and the weather just cleared up.

Took an hour to thread the top oil feed line.....damn.

Some pics. The leak, the newbie mechanic (DELETED), after Kevins, after install

Very inspiring Marc, job well done!

Question: I've always read that you should rebuild both turbos, not just one. Does that not hold true for seals?

Great job Marc. Very well done. You are going to become a real mechanic if you stay in AK long enough. The turbo looks awesome.

JR Kevin suggested BOTH. But Marc is a unique guy ( and you need to nique up behind him!) in a unique place. the passenger side was fine. So living in alaska he wanted to minimize his down time and went with one. Since his P cars get 6-7 months off in the winter in storage I think he is planning the passenger side for this winters project. It was a major task to learn a turbo R & R so he limited himself to the one side. Dont let me speak for Marc, but he is probably off driving his car today instead of hanging with us.

JR: Yep...the right side checks out thus far but I learned that "it usually isn't far behind". I plan on driving the car until it snows and the pull the right out for a freshening OR....may upgrade both turbos (slippery slippery)......

Chris: I never had a boost/power loss or smoking issue.....just a weeping turbo. It does seem to spool up to full boost FAST...but I am still taking it easy for the "break in" period...kinda.

The Fabspeeds Allow a much faster spool rate. I remember before the Fabspeeds, the boost guage went up in .1 bar increments as boost built. After the fabspeeds the computer display could not keep up, it went starting at 0.0, then 0.1,0.3,0.8 full boost. Nice turbo mod.
