Default OK to drive with failed lifter/tappet?

Got car back (see 'Drove car after 3 months post from Graham) and have a failed lifter/tappet.
Is it ok to still drive the car or no? The lifters (3) are being replaced next week...Should I even drive it to the shop or trailer it there? Bob, Steve, anyone??

TIA

Surj:

How far is the shop? Under 50 miles?

If so, you can drive it there,....gently. Keep the RPM under 3000.

One more thing,.....if 3 are bad, give some serious thought about replacing the rest. Once the seals fail in one or two lifters, the rest usually follow.

Cheers Steve - its only one by the sound of things but if its more then I'll certainly replace them all. I've been quoted about 200GBP for the job (for 3) and the shop is about 30 miles away...

thanks, I'll stay away from driving it for the time being then.

Surj,

If it's only one, I would still replace all three lifters in that bank. When one of mine went noisy (not really "failed" per se, but was clearly on its way), I figured that since I had the valve cover off and had a new o-ring, I may as well replace the other two in that bank since I didn't want to go in there again. Each lifter was about $30-something, but that was a few years ago.

Thanks Edward - my tech said that they always replace them in 3's. Theyre about 20gbp each...

Damn bad luck this - just got the car back (actually a little early as the interior of the new garage isn't quite finished yet) and now I have to stay away from it and not drive it for a whole week!!

The sun's been out all weekend too - great.
