FWIW, I recommend the full PPI, including leakdown. I purchased a 96 C4 with 46K, knew the seller, 2nd owner, knew he treated the car well, knew he serviced the car routinely at a great shop. Guess what? Leak down test and subsequent investigation showed 2 bad exhaust valves. Seller lowered the price and I ended up getting a rebuild. PPI $$: CHEAP insurance. Know what you're getting.

Oh yeah, and I had ALL the service records including those from the original owner.

coltj, thanks for the heads-up. I'll definitely do a full PPI just to be sure.

All, thank you so much for your input. This is such a great board to hang out... I've been learning a great deal. That's why I became a support member even though I'm porscheless.

Jonathan,
No pot shots here...... Sorry you intrepreted that way.

As a contribution to the topic:
According to registration records, the car was first titled on 3-FEB-1998 and lien
initiated 12-31-1997
Car was sold at Park Place Porsche, Dallas to the current owner.

The story holds.

That comment is a bit difficult to interpret otherwise.

Cliff doesn't need my backup but frankly, over his 30+ years as a master tech and more recently as shop foreman at BW Porsche Cliff has rebuilt more 911's than most of us will ever even have the chance to look at.

This same gentleman comes to our local track on his own time to help folks with maintenance issues in real time - no charge (he lives near MSR - our favorite local haunt).

The final and most endearing characterisitic about Cliff is his insatiable love and curiosity about all things Porsche - I am humbled to consider him a friend.

Sheesh!
Maybe it's not such a good idea to offer local low mileage, one owner, w/ all service record cars to fellow rennlisters after all.

Nah, Howard, you did fellow Rennlisters a great favor by listing the car. We're just an over cautious bunch, that's all, when it comes to buying the "right" car. The proof for sale is in the pudding... or in this case the PPI. Pguy should give you a great big "Thank you" if the car pans out.

Back to the subject at hand....

Here are some pics from my car's PPI last year at Boardwalk. Cliff is in picture 7 , staring at my engine... I have heard that he can tell whether or not there is carbon build-up just by staring down the engine... (ok maybe not, but I am trying to lighten the mood a bit here)

I remember when you posted this pics the first time...and I remember saying to myself "that undercarriage is spotless!". Geez...did the PO scrub that thing before he sold it?

This is just Rennlisters looking out for one another. Hell, I've even been burned by another Rennlister before so when you're dealing with a complete stranger it makes matters worse.

question from a neophyte:
if you bought the car already and the ppi is done afterwards, as in this case, can you still make the completion of the transaction contingent upon a clean ppi?
thanks.
