Default Vibration issues, please help

Hi,

My friend in Ohio had a suspension problem. She had already changed her A-arm thrust bushings per my suggestion, and now this again.

"my steering wheel is vibrating at highway speeds, like 65+ mph. I also kind of feel a vibration in the seat of my pants, like i can feel my pant leg moving against my leg. I also notice that if I'm going like 75 and let off the gas, I kind of feel the whole car sort of vibrating. it's not violent vibrations, but it's definitely not normal.

"Oh, and i took it to firestone already and told them about the problem. I ended up with two new tires (so now I have 4 new tires) and getting an alignment. They said the suspension was OK but I sort of doubt that. (I had to pay for the tires and alignment). I'm thinking it's either steering or suspension."

I'm drawing a blank. Any suggestions.

Thanks.

Somehow, would think it's a tire/wheel balance problem. Just from my experience.

Once in a while I had a shimmy. After a new steering rack and front sway bar bushings my car is nice and tight.

That makes me wonder about powertrain issues. Although there are very few powertrain componets that could go wrong. Is she driving a C4 by any chance ? Otherwise I'd have to agree with the above...Also, you didn't say - tip/6sp ?

Bad vibs and shimmy especially at high speeds had me perplexed for a while too. Thought it was tire balance etc...Got the car up and noticed the CV boot was torn and a piece of the inner ring was missing. Mystery solved. I am having my right rear CV replace right now.

Or badly balanced wheels.... I think one of my wheel weights fell off after washing the wheels, I was getting a vibration when driving home from the track on Monday. Havent had time to look at the car...

Like others have said, I would have the wheels checked for a bent rim.

I've always had a slight shimmy in my 4S occuring in the range of 55-65 mph. Nothing I did cured it....new tires, multiple balancing jobs, new rims (hollow spokes) nada !!

Replaced the rear motor mounts, GONE !!

Folks,

Thanks for the collective wisdom. Unfortunately, she does not drive a Porsche, a good Ole American beater.

I'll pass these suggestions along. She is a poor student. I hate to see her rip off by unscrupulous mechanics.

My M5 also had a similar problem that I could not cure. I finally got front rotors as a last resort. However the accident took her before I can install the rotors. Anyone looking for M5 front rotors, I have a pair in my garage.

Ahhh...now I understand your lack of car washes.

Jauder:

FWIW, check for "scramp" rubber stuck to either your tires or the inside(s) of your wheels. Might stll be a wheel weight, but since you mentioned the timing of being post track day, you might want to check that out.

Also, as a DIY tip, either make a record, or outline with a marker of where your wheel weights are after getting a wheel balance so you know where they are suppose to be. I typically outline the wieghts with a Sharpie and also tape the weights over with racer's tape...

Regards
