Scrubbing my underside with pics - really had me wondering. Wasn't sure if I should look.

But since I did, was a fabulous job indeed !

Looks great, but why? Are you going to make it a concours vehicle only? To take it to that level of clean then subject it to nasty road stuff seems like a process that will never end.

Just curious in CA..........ZP44

I'll take a stab at answering your question, Zombie. I srubbed mine about 1-1/2 years ago while my engine was out. I removed all the cosmoline and 10 years of road grim from the body, suspension, motor, and tranny. It took more time than I would like to admit to, but it looks great! I have driven 5000 miles or so since, some in the rain, some on the track, and the underside still looks great. The only cleaning since has been hosing the underside a couple times while washing the car. I enjoy working on my car, and it makes me happy to change the oil or whatever and look up at such a clean car. We had a tech meeting at a local shop, and my car was put up on a lift (randomly selected as an example of the last air-cooled 911) and the mechanic was impressed! I would think that any mechanic who works on a really clean car would take a little extra care.

I was thinking about doing this for some weight loss. I have heard that there is 40-60 lbs. of undercoating. I would only take this out of the rear wells if I did anything.

Makes sense to me Crimson, I used to do it too.

I'm afraid to admit that I hate working on cars, I really just like to drive them. I'm not saying I don't know how to work on them, it's just that I can now finally afford to have someone much more qualified than me maintianing & fixing mine, at least till I go broke.............lol

Funny thing is - out of all of the years that I've owned mine - I've only found 1 guy who can actually do things right - and after that I even still find mistakes.

As far as the cosmoline - it looks fantastic without it - but I think I'm going to leave mine on (my paranoia about rust).
