John,
Yeah, it's pretty tough stuff. Get a little leverage tool in there and it will come off. Just be careful not to gouge anything up. I hate it when I go to do a good deed on my car and end up making things worse. Sometime I'll have to tell you about the three or four window trim seals I went through - at about $70 each !! That's why the Porsche parts guy gets a birthday present from me every year....

Ciao

This is the picture of the bulb. It just pushes into the socket. I put a Quarter there next to it for reference.

cabrio993 .... Thanks for starting the thread. I just replace mine. I would have never known there was a bulb there if you didn't ask. As has already been said....I love this place.

This is hilarious. I owned a 993 cab for five years and now have a TT.

Neither of them had an illuminated light switch. Until just now, I also thought that Porsche just did not see the need to light this **** (I justified in my mind that it was due to the fact it is on the left side of the steering wheel and nothing else is over there anyway except the key).

How funny!! I guess I am going to buy a few bulbs and so is Mike who just bought my cab!!

Actually, it makes sense that it is the first one to burn out if you think about the fact that it IS the only one that stays on whenever the car is on regardless of the rest of the lights. Common sense comes in handy every now and then, damn!!

Thank guys for teaching me something else about my 993. I'll be glad when it's time to renew my Rennlist membership!

If you guys are going to switch out or replace the bulbs, I would suggest you get LEDS which are bright and do not burn out. I got some for the instrument cluster on my Pathy and they work great. I got them from http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-b...gi?product=CAR (no affiliation and stuff).

They wedge bulbs are on the bottom of the page and they have some thin ones on the second page.

My company sells the LED's but I didn't bother, I just used a 283 bulb and be done with it. If you put an LED there you'll end up putting them everywhere as it won't be the correct colour!

Graham and Bob W. Thanks for telling me about the lit ignition key slot. Mine doesn't light up so now I know. At Devek doing the HID install I noticed someone elses lit up. Funny how that happens and you realize that it was supposed to be lit.

Oh Great!!

Where is that light bulb at? How do you change it? Now my headlight switch looks lonely at night all lit up by himself!

Now you guys got me curious. My headlight switch (1995 model) is not lit. Is the 1995 model supposed to be?

I was trying to get that icon plastic-cap off and couldnt remove it. Does anyone have a picture? I pulled back the rubber sleeve a little to expose the edge of the cap, but see two edges. Does one pry at the second edge or the one near the icon-cap?

Gosh, its the simplest things that frustrate me

Yes, it is supposed to be lighted as well. You need to remove both. It is like a plastic ring and then the cap. When you get both out, you should be left with just the rubber sleeve and then the bulb in the center. You need to stretch the sleeve some to get the cap/ring off, but it will shrink back. Just use a small flat head screwdriver and while you work your way around it, pull on the cap... kindda removing a bicycle tire from the rim.

I just replaced my bulb. It's funny how the little things make me happy. I bought my bulb at Pep boys. Sylvania has a two pack, number 2721, for about $3.35. Based on Cabrio993's earlier posting they are actually cheaper at the dealer!

update: just when one thinks they know his or her car well, all the features etc., and to discover something is not working that you never knew was supposed to. Low and behold, my headlight switch has a burnt-out bulb

Got the icon cap off, pulled the bulb and replaced it with Sylvania p/n 2721 from my local auto parts store... Cool, now I can sleep at night

its all in the details
