I am considering buying a ' 97 Carrera S, I have heard that there is an issue with the air injection system clogging. A local service shop told me that this causes the " check engine light " to come on and the car will not pass emissions test. I am told this requires a top end engine rebuild to totally take care of the problem. Does any one know if all '96 to '98 993's have this potential problem. Anyone's knowledge on this issue is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Jeff:
There is a ton of information available on this issure. Do a search under "secondary air injection," "SAI," and "carbon build up." Also look at p-car.com in the DIY section for a do-it-yourself article on how to clean the passages periodically to prevent them from becoming clogged. Finally, go on the PCA website in the technical questions section. Joel Reiser has written extensively about this subject.
To answer your specific question, no, not all cars have had this problem. Whether they all will at some point or not remains to be seen. For what it's worth, my 96 has 40,000 miles and I cleaned the passages last fall as preventative maintenance. They were not clogged. I would factor in some reduction in price for the potential problem, however.
Good luck, Rob.
