Never bother with 996's or Boxters when I can tell one from the other (intended slight) OK I know some of them are great cars but I like the club of 993 cars better. I always try to wave at 993's. I feel like a little kid when I see one like mine I almost want to pull it over and check out it's guts. My town has a lot of 911's so some get jaded I imagine. I suspect some are less car nutty than I am as many wave not. One road where I see waves is Foothill Expressway and also Skyline. I'll keep it going, waving at other 993's won't end on my watch.

I wave or flash headlights at 993s and older P-cars. I can only recall a couple of times the 986/996 drivers have ever initiated or returned an acknowledgement. Forget about the Porsche station wagon drivers.
Anyone ever had a Jeep Wrangler? Now that is an active club. I loved my Wrangler and still miss her today. My wife misses her (him to her) more than I do. She really bonded with that car.

I usually wave at the P-car models I like. I recently gave the thumbs up to a nice example of a 968 and it was enthusiastically appreciated.

I don't usually wave at SUV's though nor new Turbos especially the convertible version. That's heresy.

I'd wave at a GT3 even though it's newer than my car.

When I'm in my 914-6 I don't wave until waven too for some reason. Only real aficionados would wave at me anyway so it's used as a test of sorts.

I wave at all of the p-cars except Cayennes ... it seems as though they tend to be driven by women who really have no idea what they are driving.

I often give a thumbs up or quick wave, and today I blinked a 993 (with no response). Frankly its extremely rare that it is ever acknowledged, and basically I'm giving up (except perhaps 356's or something very special that suggests a true Porschephile).

I got rid of my last Wrangler when I bought my 993. My wife still misses it. And yes, that is an active club. Where I live, there are a ton of Jeeps, and zero Porsches. Needless to say, my waving has been cut down significantly. I still find myself waving to people in Jeeps on occasion, who probably think I'm crazy.
At one point, my three modes of transportation were a Wrangler, a GSXR-1100, and my boat. Felt like I spent my whole life waving.

Boxster owners always ignore me. They don't even look at me. I've had good luck with Cayenne owners, they usually always wave back or check out my car (if it's a guy driving).

True Story: A few weeks back a few of us Rennlisters got together for a Sunday drive. We met at a Coffee shop and there were 4 of our 993's together and 1 Boxster next to me. The Boxster left without even talking to us (there were maybe only 6-8 other people in the coffee shop). A 996 arrived and immediately was excited about the 911's in the parking lot. There's the difference.

I drove up on a 996TT or it might have been a 996 GT3 last week on the 405 South and I didn't wave to him (not that I knew the rules but I was paying attention to the traffic). A few minutes later he passed me by and waved at me and I gave him a BTW, the car had a paper plate from the Speed Gallery in Studio City.

LOL!!! Ok, I wave (or flash headlights - t o me it represents the same friendly reaction) to all 993's and older. If a 996/986 acknowledges me, then frankly, I'm always caught off guard and usually miss the wave (bad track record with post-993 models). Cayenne -forget about it!!

It's fun and I don't really care if someone waves or not, but when they do, or do it before I do, it makes my day!!!

I typically wave and flash headlights, etc...almost always with the older Pcars or 993s, and of course I always wave when someone waves at me. I have to agree with a lot of the people who have already responded...when in my 996, I used to try to flash headlights or wave at other 996s, only to be ignored or stared at like I thought their brights were on or something....in the 993, I seem to get a lot of waves [even from the folks in older 911s, which is a great thing--in the 996, almost NO ONE waved at me from the Air-cooled club]...maybe that is why I got onto the Air-cooled bandwagon, so that I could get more appreciation from the Pcar community on my purchase decision!!

In all honesty, I think that the "wavers" are the folks that drive a Pcar because they love Pcars, regardless of model...it's just sad that lots of the newer Pcar drivers are "driving the badge" and are not inclined to even notice another Pcar...maybe it even makes them mad to see someone like me driving one [I'm only 24, and some of these suit-types must think daddy bought the car for me or something].

I'm all about Porsche, regardless of model, so I always notice them and am happy to see "the wave" when it is passed around from another Pcar

- Wave to newer model type than yours only when you're waved to first
- Same for Turbo vs non-Turbo. Return a Turbo's wave but don't initiate

Did anyone have a link or post??

I'm sure others here would enjoy it.

B: Boxster (all models, but "S" gives you more standing)
C: older 911s, 914

E: 924

Rule 1: only wave and/or acknowledge cars within class or one class below (but with due sympathy to those lower down the scale)

Rule 4: Never wave to a car two or more classes below your own
Rule 5: No matter what, wave should only consist of raising the palm from around the steering wheel. Anything more is ostentatious or over-enthusiastic.
Rule 6: Never allow a passenger to wave. They are not in the club and have no right.
Rule 7: When alongside another Porsche at traffic light, always look directly ahead, avoid eye contact and never, ever engage in eye contact.
Rule 8: Never admire another Porsche when driving. If on foot, and come across another Porsche, brief glances over your shoulder are permitted.

[There is such a thing as the Hierarchy of the Porsche Nod/Wave. I am obliged to wave first to earlier 911s and 356s, with the exception of 964s, which must wave at the same time. Modern Turbo and GT3 owners must wave first, and I will perhaps wave back. 996 and 997 owners must wave first, and I will deign to nod in a superior fashion. Boxster owners receive nothing, even though I am also a Boxster owner. 944 owners receive a wave, because I am a 944 owner as well and I know how they--- we---suffer. Cayenne owners can suck it.]
This sums it up nicely. Source: My 1995 911 Carrera

I've never been able to make my rear wheels lose traction on a dry surface, though. Too much traction.

Well if you guys ever get to Hong Kong don't hold your breath waiting for the waves. So many Porsche's here and so many people just driving the badge with an air of superiority. Other ex pats tend to wave if driving older models but even that's rare. My kid's always asked me why I kept waving when most people ignored the wave, I explained that I was hoping to educate the other drivers. They got a kick out of that, that and my continued lack of success at eliciting a response :-)
