Default I'm PISSED! Airbag doesn't fit!

OK, can someone confirm if the 4 spoke OEM airbags for both the manual and tiptronic wheels are interchangeable? I recently bought a carbon fiber 4 spoke OEM wheel part #993 347 804 64 with Tiptronic controls to replace my OEM manual wheel part# 993 347 804 52. However, proceeding to change the airbag, I find that the airbag is too deep, namely, at the screw points. I proceed to take off the metal things around the screw holes on the airbag to shave off some depth but still no go. The airbag definitely does not fit. The outer dimensions are exact but the depth is off. Why would Porsche require an entirely different airbag for manual and Tiptronic? Or maybe, I need the special Leather Airbag that says 'Carrera' on it? That is the bag I usually see with this carbon fiber wheel as pictured below? Please help!

I dont think it is a tiptronic issue...I think it is a 95 vs 96-98 issue. I encountered the same problem earlier this year and resolved it by buying the RS wheel from Gert!!!

Damn, that's what I feared. Looking at earlier 996's, it seems that their 4-spoke wheels have a 'thinner' airbag as well.

So now, does anyone have a later model 993 or earlier 996 4 spoke airbag that is black for sale?

The airbag frame is slightly different on '95 models. It is NLA from Porsche. Ebay has a constant flow of 993 wheels and you should be able to find one.

Sorry to hear it, I know that's got to be disapointing.

jdoc7,

I've got a 4-spoke wheel w/ airbag that came out of my '97 993 C2S when it had 14,000 miles on it so it's very new. Let me know if you're interested and we can work something out. I'm just down in Indy so we can figure out delivery as I'll probably be coming up to Chicago over the next couple of weeks.

I'll be traveling this week but will check back; feel free to email me at rfairwea@yahoo.com.

Cheers,

Rick

jdoc7,
I ran into the same problem with a carbon fiber wheel I purcahsed for my 95. The airbag wouldn't fit. My mechanic was able to switch some parts and make it work. Dont exactly know what he did but I could get photos late next week if you need to see what he did.
