Convert a 993 from H1 to H4 bulbs?
Hi everyone, I'm a Rennlist newbie. What a fantastic source of information. I thought my car was perfect now I'm looking at lights, exhausts...oh dear
Anyone know if it's possible to convert a Euro spec 993 from H1 bulbs to H4 bulbs? I'm looking into getting a dual beam HID lighting system and having H4 bulbs seems to be cheapest (although that depends on the cost of conversion from H1 to H4..if possible at all)
This is only my 2nd post so please be gentle!
Thanks.

Doogle,
I wouldn't waste your time. Mounting bases probably are not the same and the 993's optics must have been designed around the H1 lamp. Why make your lighting system into a mongrel?
The H1 kits are pretty reasonable in price - don't you have access to auto-lamps online.com in the UK? I have read that their kits are high quality.

Thanks Mike,
The only problem (I think) is that I'd need 2 bulbs per side whereas a H4 fitting only requires 1 as it's both main and dipped beams in one. So I just thought this might be a cheaper option.
I do a lot of driving on country roads and the main beams would be a welcome upgrade as the stock ones are pretty useless.

The lens and reflector geometry is probably very different for the H4. Even if the bulb bases were changed over it would not be a straight swap. You would basically have to build two entire custom reflectors and maybe even housings which would be very expensive.

Doogle,
I can't imagine how you'd ever make a single lamp (double "filiment") work. The low beam in the 993 is behind a projector lens and the high beam is out behind a reflector.
I live in the country as well - same problem, so I installed a HID low beam system two years ago and upgraded the high beams to a 100w halogen, which is about 20% better light down the road than the 55w stock lamps.
You will love the HID for the low beams and should do the job for you on those unlit country roads.

Thanks guys,
I'm coming round to forgetting the main beam upgrade and just putting some 100w bulbs in there. They're illegal over here so I'd have to get some over there .. any recommendations as to type and supplier?
I'm not sure if US 993's have the headlight height adjustment switch like the Euro cars do, but I could always hook that up to my main beams and raise the beam angle!!..only joking....althought with a fast motor.......
