Ebay bidding war on 993 JetHot coated exhaust tips
I saw a bidding war on ebay for a set of OEM 993 exhaust tips that have been coated with the Jet Hot ceramic high gloss coating. Not sure if it's amongst Rennlist folk or not. I was going to jump in but the price has gotten above the $$ I had in mind.
I contacted the Jet Hot company to inquire about the price to coat and was told it would be $25/tip with $22 shipping and take 3-5 days. Sounds like a pretty good deal and the Jet Hot looks to be a pretty high-quality finish.
Any experience with the process before I ship off my tips.

Keith,
I used Jet-Hot to coat a set of RSR headers for my 74 911 a few years ago. They turned out GREAT! After 4 or 5 years they still looked GREAT!
No affiliation with Jet-Hot etc.

The question begs to be asked - why the hell coat the tips??
Coating the headers makes sense. Hell, maybe even a muffler. But tips... The fact that it could be done doesn't mean that it should.

'Cos they look like chrome without the chrome issues (fading, peeling, oxidization). Jet hot is a ceramic coating with (IIRC) a silver base in it (other colors too).
It might chip, but it won't suffer from peeling, or oxidization (discoloration) like the regular chome parts can. I think it's as tough as nails too.
Not used it myself, but seriously considered it!
Clive.

To answer the Why do it question? Would you believe it if I told you they had data that supported HP gains due to the slickness of the coating????
I thought not. OK the real reason is to dress up the rear end a bit on the old dull tips and not jump all the way to the BIG O's!

The tips on ebay look like the smaller '95 tips.
I had Performance Coatings in Auburn Washington do a set of tips in grey. They did a good job.

I think if I had to do it over I might try the Ceramichrome but then I already polished the tips to a bright stainless steel shine.

Why not just polish them?
The Jet-Hot coated headers I've seen not only discolor, but chip on impact. Again, chipping is not a big issue for a header, as it's not hit by road debry, but the tips...

Mike,
Headers probably run a lot hotter than the tips ! Although the tips get hot, they don't get glowing red-hot like the header/exhaust manifold can.
I think the tips would clean up with a wipe, not a full up remove and re-polish.
Just thoughts... not from actual experience.

I just sent my rusted up Supercups out to Performance coatings to be ceramic coated with what they call chromex. It can only be an improvement from the nice blue tips I have now.

I'm with nile13...why not just polish them. I had mine profesionally polished over two years ago and today they still look like chrome mirror finish...cost about $85. The ebay is way high and my polished tips look better than the pictures shown. Just my $.02 worth. Save the coating for where there is real heat involved.
