993 cab roll bar
I'm thinking about a 993 cab roll bar. Has anyone seen any roll bars that are similar to the boxster hoops? Even if it was custom fabbed.
I'd like to get something that looks stylish and just leave it in the car permanently. All the roll bars I've seen are just "ugly" in my opinion and I'm too lazy to constantly pull the roll bar in and out.
I'm going to do a bit of research here and if I can get a set of hoops custom-made I was wondering if anyone else would want to go in on it (to hopefully lower the cost).
Cheers,
Boris

Boris,
You may have a up hill battle on your hands. I have the DAS roll bar and it is a bit of a pain to take in and out (down posts in rear are pretty tight) I dont think you will avoid the ugly factor as the rear down bars that will attach to your seatbelt mounting points are a must for any roll bar application. The angle of these down posts are also important, too small of a angle and the bar will not function in a roll over. Also, you are limited by the bolt in pick up points for the bar. Next month I am having Kelly Moss bulid me a bolt in roll cage using the DAS bar as starting point. I did not find anyone who could fab a cage for me without having the car in their shop. I would not trust your project to just anyone who can bend pipes, your life may depend on their skill set. Kelly Moss is one of the best in the business, maybe while my car is there, they can use my cab to come up with something to suit your needs. Feel free to contact me off line if this idea appeals to you.

Boris, think about using an off the shelf roll bar and having it upholstered in leather to match the interior nicely. I am planning on doing this to the bar that I just added to my 964 Cab. I think it will look like a factory option if done right.

S Car Go in San Rafael has custom made exactly what your are describing. They made one for a Speedster (featured in Porsche & 911 World) so should be able to make one for a cab if they have not done one yet. From the pictures the quality was top-notch - it was covered in leather with deviated stitching to match the car. As I recall, they had to have the car on the premises to do it.
Keep us posted - I may be interested in getting one as well sometime down the road.

Boris-
I know of a very qualified guy in the Bay Area who can fabricate anything you want. He currently works at a commonly mentioned race shop but just opened his own shop. He is meticulous about producing a quality product and is competively priced.
My 95 C4 is is in the shop having a custom fabbed weld-in rollbar installed--it will have a welded diagonal and removable harness bar. The rear mount points will be just below rear window which means the rearward tubing will follow the headliner for a very clean look (as well as a strong mounting point). Just waiting for paint so should be finished next weekend. I went to see it in progress and it looks great so far. The fabricator has done fantastic work on another project car in the past: rollbar, brake ducts on back of rotors, and strut tower brace.
I am in the Bay Area and would welcome the chance to show you the rollbar when finished.

Boris,
I saw an ad last week in one of my Porsche magazines for exactly what you are looking for, but I'll have to go try and find it for you. The design looked very similar to what you see in the Boxster, with a hoop behind each seat shaped like the seat. The ad said you could paint them any color you wish, or you could go with brushed or polished aluminum. I think it was a setup that can be installed and removed at home, and I think it ties into the seat belt holes. The only drilling is at the base I think.
Having a 993 cab myself, if I decide to track mine this is probably the set I would go with. I think they would probably look stunning in Guards Red bars to match the car, Cashmere leather covered to match the interior or just brushed aluminum for simplicity.
Let me know if you want me to look for the ad, and I'll try to get the name of the company for you.

Robert - let me know about that add. It's always easier to purchase off the shelf rather than have one custom fabricated.
I'll also give Rob a call at S-CAR-GO. I've known Rob for the past 15 years (ever since he worked at high performance house), so I'll ask what is involved and cost.
Thanks for all the helpful advice. I'll do a bit more research and get back to everyone. I just want to take my car out on some time trials.
Cheers,
Boris

David-
I'm not sure how to respond to you privately--but I can let you know the approximate cost of custom rollbars from several shops. There is a HUGE price differential between several local shops.

Let me know what price is at S CAR GO. My guy is a great deal for quality work.

Robert - please post the pic/reference if you find it.
Boris - yes, please keep us updated. The speedster they did the work on was a Maritime blue 94 that had been owned by Barry Bonds at one time. They also did quite a bit of engine work and the article was quite favorable. The car was on their website at one time.
FYI, in the Cargraphics catalog is listed a set of these "hoops" for a 94 speedster. It's difficult to tell if it's just a harness bar or a roll bar...but the effect is similar to the rollbar that S Car Go did.
Thanks

One thing to keep in mind is what organizations you plan to run with. Each organization has their own rules for roll bar requirements, but the way many are written they may not allow the shape (multiple hoops) that you are all talking about. Plus, most groups do not allow aluminum roll bars.

Boris,
Well I found something, although it's not a roll-bar. I don't think it's the one I found earlier, but it gives you the idea. The address is:
<a href="http://essentialstyling.com/ess_wind_deflector.htm" target="_blank">http://essentialstyling.com/ess_wind_deflector.htm</a>
This one is a wind deflector, but I still think I saw a roll bar in this design. If nothing else, these pictures may really help you show a custom fabricator what you are looking for.
I'll keep looking for what I thought I saw.... <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" /> <img src="graemlins/oops.gif" border="0" alt="[oops]" />

Robert,
I really like the look of the ESS windscreen. I'm going to give them a shout and ask if with some fabrication that can be converted into a roll bar.
The price is certainly reasonable.
Cheers,
Boris
