It sounds like you really want the M5. Yet you ask a bunch of Porsche owners to chime in? What do you we are going to say? Blaspheme against Porsche? I think not. <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[nono]" />

But I do have your solution - Since you can't jet ski in the winter, get rid of it and the Tahoe!!

Seriously, you gotta do what you gotta do. Drive what makes you the happiest. Enjoy what makes you the happiest, and don't regret purchasing it. I don't think any of the above-threaders reget the Porsche decision they made.

I would go on a bimmer board and ask about the reliability of the new M5, i know a guy that has one and he has been having major trouble with electrical gremlins i.e. won't start or cuts out sometimes. The factory probably fixed this by now, so it might not be an issue.

Sachin,

You really owe it to yourself to drive both and then decide. I did, and the M5 could not hold a candle to the 993TT with respect to putting a smile on my face. Hopefully, this will be true for you as well.

Honestly, the M5 is a great all-arounder, but that's precisely the problem. It's too much of a compromise solution - light steering, floaty suspension, & heavy (4000 lb) compared to a 993TT. Heck, at 3308 lb, even the 993TT is a bit heavy (at least, for track use), but it's perfect for everyday street driving.

As Steve mentioned, the 993TT is GREAT in snow if properly equipped with winter tires. The AWD shines through. I've used Pirelli Wintersport 240's for the past two winters.

Come on...follow your heart on this one!!! You've already got a "practical" vehicle in the Tahoe! The 993TT is a classic, and the M5 is just a sports sedan that's about to become yesterday's news with all the 500 hp MB and BMW sedans on the horizon.

BTW, I also have a "chestnut brown" (burgundy) interior, and love it. It's actually a pretty uncommon factory interior color.

Maybe, the following pic (thanks, AJ) will help you decide!

Talking

.02 cents worth.

Have owned bpth BMW's and 911's, including an M5 and now my 993. I have to ditto the comment about the M5 becoming yesterday's hot sedan vs. the air cooled legacy of the 993 series.

For about 10 years, I burned through many different BMW "M" cars only to come back to Porsche for fun and have a daily "appliance".

I think that you may find that if you get the M5 you wont find that it draws you out for a drive and a smile like the TT would !

Personally, I have not smiled this much in years since I got both my '72 911 and '95 993 !

Thanks for all the replies. I did end up trading in my 993 and the MB. I couldn't get rid of the Tahoe because the wife drives it to work, and we need it for the jet-ski.

When it came down to it the M5 was an awesome car, but it lacked soul and character. My wife drove the 96 C2 to the dealer for the M5 trade, got out of the car and said "There is no way you are getting rid of this car unless you buy another Porsche". That sealed it for me.

What I did get was a gorgeous Arena Red 96 C4S with 20K miles (Yellow TT was very abused and needed about 15K of work). I did pay for a PPI (sale was contingent on a satisfactory PPI), and discovered some minor issues and I negotiated delivery only after they fixed everything. Total tab for fixes $3,000 (They pay). Bought the car for 53K. I'll post pics in about a week.

You need to see the video of one of the rennlist members that race an m5 with his stock 95c2! I watched that video 4 times already. I wish i had his web site address but the winner was the 95c2! Imagine what a 993tt can do!

Hi Shant,

I believe that you are referring to E.J.

Here's his videos:

And the one with the M5 is called:
