Lighting around ignition switch
Folks,
Was talking with a fellow P-buddy the other night about how dark it is around the Ignition switch and a PITA to find the slot for the ignition tool at night. (oo-er!)
He showed me that there is a blocked off cutout above the switch on the instrument housing.. Sure enough, PET shows a postion for a switch (IIRC) on the 964's...
Got me thinking that adding a small bulb in the cavity (like the one in the ashtray) connected to the Dome light would be mucho useful.... (maybe even a white LED - as I don't want to be replacing bulbs in that location) too often.
Any one of you seen anything like this (maybe a factory option?) as I've seen some later models (TT's?) have extra footwell lighting too.
Thought's, ideas, photos... all welcome..
Clive.

Blow me down...
I'd searched but nothing seemed to come up...
However, going back to PET does describe the ashtray fixture as just that and "ignition lock"... even back to the 94 MY ?!?!?
anyway, whoohoo! there's some light at the end of the tunnel ....
Just have to pull one of the dials and see if there's a connection there for it.
Part numbers:
964-632-113-01 for the mount,
N-017-751-2 for the bulb and
999-632-014-00 for the bulb holder

MY '95 has a light built into the key. Battery is replaceable. When battery is OK, works great to find the slot - just squeeze the key. Should be easier to find a lighted key than muck around with the dash.

Did that come stock on your car?

If you have a normal key (ie not the switchblade) you can swap the little bulb in the keyhead for a bright white LED with a little tinkering around. I have done it and I always use it to find the key hole, it is very very bright indeed.

I like the built in light and it seems like it could be retrofit. Anyone have an idea of where one could splice it in so it worked with the interior lights?

Greg,
I'm intending to "dig" about this weekend.... Will post pictures and a report with what I find...
My thinking is a simple White LED mounted above the switch ring.... I think Radio Shack should have what I'm after. Should be able to use a resistor value inline to figure the current limit and hence the intensity of the light shining down.
Hopefully there's a dome light signal cable in there.... somewehere.... especially if it came standard on some cars....
My weekend project...

I just did the LED upgrade to the key...very nice. Got it done while listening to Hot Tuna and finished the job before the sound of the bottle hitting the floor on track 3!
I also took an interior shot to post up on the interior thread.
Cheers!
