Default NoVa\MD\DC HID Interest?

Okay, Steve already took the plunge and our friends in Florida have not only arranged a mass DIY but have put together a group buy as well. That thread shows a price of $250 a set with over 10 sets. It looks like that number has been reached. Anyone else interested in jumping in on this GB or project. These longer nights remind me how much I don't like the standard lights. I'd actually prefer a factory upgrade kit, but can't justify all that additional expenditure to myself. Gotta do it.

So funny - I was JUST about to start a thread exactly as you have written yours. Glad you're still into doing this. I have my equipment now and would love to meet up with some folk for an HID half day install session on a Saturday sometime soon. I have a 2 car garage and can host this

unless others would care to host a half day instead at their place. I live in Silver Spring, MD. (I-495 to Georgia Ave North, go 4.5 miles and then onto my street - easy to find!) but have no dremel tool or small file to enlarge the opening for the bulb. What other tools are required to do this? Has anyone in this area done it already that would like to help us tackle this en masse?

I have this kit (pics below) and are ready to roll with it when others are... Yeah, these will definitely work better when they're IN my car as opposed to ON my car

and the high beam twin pak:

DIY challenged,
Steve

Steve,
Have Dremel, will travel. I obviously won't have my kit for awhile, but if there isn't going to be a mass event, we don't have to wait for mine to come in. BTW, looking over some of the old posts on mounting this stuff, some heavy duty velcro for the ballast is probably a good idea, or some foam to stuff it in somewhere. Please take a look and see if you have a preference (I'm thinking velcro but . . .). Right now I am probably working on MLK observed and on the 20th. Maybe, if I can get one of those off (I'm in the Navy in a government office job so you would think) we could tackle this then.

Joe, Steve,

Another point to consider when installing the kit is some people have been having problems with the HID bulb not fitting into the hole of the headlight socket and the socket may need to be modified a bit to get the bulb in there. I haven't had to do this, so I can't comment on what it would take to make it right... sounds like some fairly simple filing, though. Check out this thread...

Hi Joe,

I'm "off" the 17th, Monday, Martin Luther King day - for at least a few hours... we could do it here or at your place, whichever is better for you. I'm in sales/service so people still call me 7 days a week, but I can quickly return phone calls on the sly here and there throughout the day around a project.

Is that any good for you? Or is a Saturday better? The 17th would probably be better for me for now. I'll supply some food and drink

Also, thanks Kelly about the info you posted on that thread. I of course read that one too and that's why I suggested having a dremel tool and small file at hand as well .

Eager to see better at night,
Steve

Re: the bulb not fitting, yes, a simple filing would do it. Just make sure that you blow out all the metal shavings from the inside (I used an air compressor). Definitely do NOT force fit it through the hole. Not worth the aggravation (and cost) of a broken bulb.

Steve,
Your place is better for me - too cold outside for me. If I have the 17th off, we ought to be able to make this happen.

Steve,
It looks like I've got the 17th off, so let me just check a couple of other things today and I'll give you an approximate time that I'll show up.
Pete,
I just ordered mine too, so, if you want to, we can attack this together again in a few weeks.

I'm in too, Joe
Let me know what time's good for you. I'm very flexible as long as it's not at the very end of the day as I have to be somewhere at 645pm.

JKW 993 - Glad to hear! Do you have your HID kit in hand ready for the 17th, or are you "in" for the next meet in a few weeks?

Steve

The group buy is running $250 a set. Shipping is an additional $20. The details are in the Florida HID thread but basically the guy's email is "TheLegend321@aol.com" and you are interested in the Rennlist Group Buy for 4300K H1 H.I.D Conversion Kit. We could save a few dollars by combining on shipping but it might be just as easy to spend a extra $10 to ensure everyone gets theirs whether or not our schedules coincide later. He is expecting another shipment in this week, since it seems Rennlisters have depleted his supply.
Pete and JKW, since none of us have ours in hand, maybe we could get together in a few weeks and go through this again. My plan is to take everything with me to Steve's in case we have to go through the wheel wheels as described on the Robin's site but I'm hoping to take the easier route. Easy or hard, we'll figure it out on Monday.

JW,
That and some velcro or some foam to pack the ballast - that's supposed to be it. I'll know more after tomorrow. We'll see what develops.
