John,
I had an Alpine in-dash am/fm/xm/cd unit installed in my 968 coupe a few months ago by a local stereo outfit. They specialize in Porsche installs, they even have a 996 sitting in their showroom.
In my 968, they mounted the antenna right on the dashboard, over on the passenger side, near the windshield and pillar. It's barely noticeable, and I get perfect reception.

I think there was actual useful information in this thread...but I'm not sure, my high-school latin was of little use in translation.
Sounds pretty encouraging that an inside mount will give good reception regardless of what the XM site says.

BTW, I had my XM antenna laying on the front left corner of my dashboard (driver's side) laying in the little crevice between the gauge cluster hump, the A pillar and the windshield.
It worked about 85% of the time in a very hilly town (Nashville, TN). It only failed on roads with heavy trees covering the road. I was OK with it but of course want a better solution if I put it in my new TT.
