Post I'm dreaming of a white (flag) Christmas

Hey, it's nearly Christmas, what would be your wish?

One lap of what track in what car?

Le Mans in an 83 956?
The Targa Florio in a 908/3?
The Supercup race at Monoco?
The 917 at the Nordschliefe?
The 917/30 anywhere?
or?....

Happy Holidays everyone (posted a few days early, and from the office, since I fried the family Mac two nights ago)

I'll go for "The 917/30 anywhere". I saw one of these beasts at the Monterey Historics,1,100 HP and probably no more than 1,500 lbs., what a rocketship! My next car wish, a 962, anywhere. Have a great Christmas!

Definately the 956 at Le Mans. Must be nothing in this world like doing 255 at the end of the Mulsanne straight and slowing down for a 2nd gear corner.

Of course the straight is no longer 3 miles long since they added chicanes. Can you imagine the time you would have in the car doing 225+ with your foot on the floor for 3 long miles. Must have been incredible.

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good drive!

Mark D

great choice -- which leads to my all time favorite quote about driving a really fast race car

Mark Donohue after setting the lap record at Road America in the Sunoco 917/30 (which stood for something like 15 years) was asked "Mark, how did it feel pulling up the hill on the front straight?"

His reply:

"What hill?"

Did you know that there are clearly two tracks at RA? There is the one I drive in my SRF with really long straights. The RA web site has an in car clip of a CART car running the other track. It is identical except there are very short straights.

Another great quote from Donohue, when asked if the 917/30 had "enough power". His answer? "No". So, what would be enough power? "When you can spin the tires in top gear, at the end of the longest straightaway, that's enough power."

One Lap? Are you kidding? No way you could get me out of that car after only one lap.

Merry Christmas.

FYI -

Donohue's book (Unfair Advantage) is back in print with a new edition and some new material. A great read.
