Default Need Quick Help Removing Catalytic Converter

I'm having a little difficulty removing my Cat. Converter.

I have removed the six exhaust bolts, both mufflers and the two tie straps; however, the unit is still hanging up. It shakes around but won't come down.

Do I need to apply some more force or do I need to remove the rear bumper?

Anyone done this before...need your help ASAP (currently trying to remove).

Thanks,
Ken

You have to remove the rear heatshield which is most likely unaccesible without removing the rear bumper.

There are a few screws that I can remove from under the car, but I thought that the heat shield was part of the unit. I'll try removing the few screws that I can see (the rear bumper looks like a lot of work). Thanks!

i did it w/o removing the bumper. the heat shield is attached to the cat with 4 (IIRC) screws/bolts that you should be able to se but cannot access due to space. i used pliers and either grabbed the sides of the screws or used a socket with my needle nose vice grips (i don't remember exactly what i did, since it was several months ago). as recall, one of them was a real bear to reach. but they all came out with only moderate aggravation.

Thanks for the assistance guys, got the four screws out with moderate effort. Had to pry the bumper cover a little. It's down; however, I believe I still need to remove the bumper cover to remove the rear engine mount, can't win (in the process of installing a TPC Supercharger unit). Thanks again!

I installed my RS engine mounts w/o taking off the bumper, if that's what you're talking about. Check Robin's DIY page on RS motor mount installation.

Kelly,

Maybe I'm using the wrong term, I'm talking about the rear triangular engine support that the engine mounts and coils are bolted to.

Ken,

I was speaking of the mounts that go on the ends of that piece, I believe. Sorry, don't know if you need to take off the bumper to remove that piece... however, if you do need to remove the bumper, Toga had an excellent writeup on how to do that. Did you see it?

Kash,

the rear engine mount is bolted together by 2 bolts with the heat tube which is above the cat converter. Those 2 bolts hold also the rear engine cover. That cover has 2 screws on each side. Then the rear engine cover and heat tube are also held in place by 5 screws on the left. Those screws hold the tube going from the heat tube to the rear blower.
I think it won't be easy to remove all that. If you don't find what you need in my write ups, PM me, and I'll do the pictures you need. My engine is still out of the car.

Thanks for the info Toga...You should be hearing from me over the weekend when I should have the time to complete the removal. Sounds like I may not need to remove the rear bumper after all.

Regards,
Ken

While we're on the topic of superchargers... The TPC supercharger looks like it will cause you to remove or reroute the air ducting on the left (driver) side of the engine bay. Will this have the effect of reducing cooling air to the engine or have other adverse affects? I've been curious about that. Thanks!

Eric,

There was a post a few months back that indicated that you are still able to maintain most of your heating capacity, however, it takes a little longer to warm up (more like a water cool engine, if I remember correctly).

Ohhhh, I guess that makes sense. You have to ditch the auxiliary heater blower to make room for the supercharger. Bummer, but I guess it's not so bad. Thanks for the info.
