Default Engine Tray -- On or Off?

Another thread got me thiinking about this again.

Anyone in Florida or other sandy place taking theirs off during the summer? I drive my car most every day and am guessing the sand and dust in the motor area and sucked back up into the cover over the tranny would be a bigger pain than just leaving it on? What's ur experience?

Thanks!

Mine is a daily driver and I leave my engine cover off year round. We have sand here, too.

There's sand and grit everywhere. Take it off, especially because your live in Florida.

This topic has been talked about extensively on the 993 and 964 boards. Try a search if you're not convinced.

Conventional wisdom is that the internal damage caused by excessive heat from leaving the tray on, will easily eclipse any standard road debris damage caused by leaving the tray off.

I leave mine on in the Winter, since the air is cool and there's alot of debris on the mountain roads here in Colorado...

Does the car have to be jacked up to remove the tray?

Twiggy could probably get it out with a stubby screwdriver. Otherwise, drive up on some 2x8 scraps to get the butt end up.

You need to take that off before jacking if you are going to use the tranny as a jacking point.

You can unscrew it without jacking it up....but won't be able to slide it out unless you get a couple inches of altitude...Just a pump or two on a rear jacking plate will do....AK
