DRIVE YOUR CAR AT WATKINS GLEN!
<a href="http://www.tracquest.com/Events/wg200210.htm" target="_blank">http://www.tracquest.com/Events/wg200210.htm</a>

The long version.....

What: Rennlist/Tracquest at Watkins Glen International, Watkins Glen, NY
Saturday-Sunday, October 26th - 27th, 2002 - Drivers Education.....

One of our country’s best and most famous race tracks, WGI is located in the beautiful Finger Lakes Region of Western New York, not far from Syracuse, Ithaca and Rochester. A detailed map and other information about the track can be found on the track’s web site. For years you’ve watched all kinds of racing at WGI, from Formula I to NASCAR, and now is your chance to see what all of the hoopla is about! You can sign up for either Saturday or Sunday or both days.

Unlike most car club events, which are competitive and require 5-point harnesses, fire extinguishers and often roll bars, this is a non-competitive event, so you don’t need any special equipment for your car (including convertibles, which may also run without a roll bar) – just a helmet, which you should try to obtain for yourself because rentals will not be available (a few loaners will be available, but there aren’t many). Instruction is provided by experienced Club and SCCA racers/instructors. The general format for Saturday is as follows:

7:00 a.m. Arrive and register - coffee and Continental breakfast provided
8:00 a.m. Drivers meeting (mandatory for ALL participants and instructors)
9:00 a.m. First instructor session during last ½ hour of drivers meeting; instructors who are unfamiliar with the track can familiarize themselves with Watkins Glen.

9:30 a.m. “Ducks in a Row” for participants new to the track – Instructors drive students’ cars at slow speed on the correct line, with others in small group (usually 2 cars) following. Instructor takes a turn driving each car in group.

10:00 a.m. "Chalk talk" classroom session covering fundamentals of track driving for Slow group while Medium group on track.

9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Alternate Fast/Instructor, Medium and Slow group ½ hour open track sessions, with strict rules re passing in Slow group, much less strict in Medium group, open passing in Fast/Instructor group. Lunch is provided, along with drinks all day.
7:00 p.m. Awesome banquet (optional) at The Glen Club, located at the track.

On Sunday morning, since virtually everyone will already be familiar with the track, there will be no Ducks in a Row exercise and open lapping will start at 8:30 a.m., providing even more track time than on Saturday. You will get over 6 hours of anticipated high quality, low-traffic track time over the course of both days, more than double what you would likely get in an entire time trial or race weekend.

In addition to driving in your own sessions, both with and without instructors, you can ride with the instructors in our cars at speed, which is both very instructive, and, quite frankly, a blast! Non-participant passengers over the age of 18 are permitted at this event, so bring your spouse and/or friends if they would like to see what it’s like to ride around Watkins Glen. All kinds of cars come to these events, including Porsches, Ferraris, Audis, Vipers, NSX’s, BMW’s, RX-7’s, Subarus, Camaros, Corvettes, Mustangs, Mercedes, Jaguars and others. Professional corner workers and safety and course control personnel will help to assure a safe and fun event for everyone.

Event headquarters for this event, the Longhouse Lodge Motel, is sold out. However, I have spoken with other lodging locations in the area and have found 3 of the nicest to recommend to you:

Inn At Glenora, 5435 Route 14, Dundee, NY 14837, (800) 243-5513 - As of 10/1/02, there were 4 rooms available at the Inn. One has 2 queen beds and a private deck for $149 and 3 have 1 king bed, a whirlpool and a fireplace for $235. The Inn is about 4 miles up the road from the Longhouse, further away from the track. You can tell them you're with the TracQuest group, but it won't make any difference in the room rates.

Idlwilde Inn, 1 Lakeview Ave., Watkins Glen, NY 14891, (607) 535-3081 - As of 10/1/02, there were 3 rooms available at Idlwilde. Two rooms have 1 double bed and share a bathroom with each other, and each room is $85. The other room is larger, has a double bed in it, also shares a bathroom with another room and is $110. Breakfast is included. The Idlwilde Inn appears to be a very upscale Bed & Breakfast, but based on what's left, you have to be willing to share a bathroom. As with the Inn At Glenora, you can tell them you're with TracQuest, but it won't change the rates. Important note: NO TRAILERS ALLOWED - there's no room.

The Falls Motel, 239 N. Genessee St., Montour Falls, NY 14865, (607) 535-7262 - As of 10/1/02, there were many rooms available here. A room with a queen bed is $65, a room with 2 double beds is $75 and a room with one king bed and a whirlpool is $115. All rooms are non-smoking, and no pets are allowed. The Falls Motel is actually the closest motel to the track, although none of them are more than 15 minutes away. Information about The Falls Motel can be obtained on their web site. As with the others, you can tell them you're with TracQuest, but the rates will be the same.

The discounted early entry fee for this event is $450 for both days or $250 for one day if your entry form is postmarked/received by September 26th, 2002, slightly more if later. Instructors run for half price, unless they get at least one paying participant to attend, in which case they run for free. This price does not include a ticket to the lavish banquet at The Glen Club on Saturday night, which is being sold at TracQuest’s cost of $40 each. Although attendance at the banquet is optional, we recommend that you come. Most of the people attending the event should be there, so it will be a great chance to review Saturday’s events at the track with your fellow attendees and get even more psyched for Sunday!

To register as a participant, click on the Participant Entry Form link below and fill in all of your pertinent information. You can either print out the resulting form and fax or mail it to TracQuest or continue and register on-line. Instructors cannot yet register on line, so you will need to print out the Instructor's Entry Form and fax or mail it to TracQuest. Please note that TracQuest takes Visa and Mastercard.
