Red face 993 GT2 project ??

Given the attention the new gt2 is receiving,

What is the viability of converting a normal narrowbody 993 coupe to a 993 GT2? Is this completely stupid?
What is the approximate cost? What else is involved? Hopefully it is cheaper than $187k for a new one.

I don't think it is stupid unless you are worried about resale or originality.
My guess is it would run you $30-40K. And you could sell your N/A engine to offset that.
Loose aproximations:
993TT engine and brain $16-20K.
Re-gear tranny and internals $6-8K
Body work $10K-$12k front splitter, fender flares, rear wing. depending on parts prices.
Sell your engine $7-9K
I forgot about the brakes. Go with big reds and get the spacers from Cargraphic so you can use the 380mm floating rotor. $5K

I am sure that Gert could help you locate factory
parts but that would be much more than similar ones he could locate through cargraphic or fvd.

It has been done. A German tuner FVD-Brombacher does it. (Source: Flat6 Magazine) Starting with a base 993, the costs to convert it to a 993GT2 (roughly):
motor mods: 21,380 dollars
brakes: 5100. dollars
aero kit/suspension: 5526. dollars

Thumbs up

I don't think it's stupid either. Even more I'm "planning" to do the same. My GT2 will be more of a track car but nevertheless... Also I prefer used TT engine idea over conversion (other peoples opinion is welcome)

David,
I was talking to someone about that this weekend and he suggested having Ruf do the conversion. About 20K with all new components. They don't get into the case and change anything with the crank, which should be fine unless you have a ton of miles on your car. If you buy a salvaged 993TT engine you are never sure exactly what you have.
I am going to check out both options when I get closer to doing something.

My 993tt has the equivalent of a GT2 EVO spec engine (minus the Secan intercooler + reversed pressure sensing intake) If you look closely at where the original GT2 arch kit meets the sills, you will see it is not finished off and looks a bit of a mess. FVD sell an arch kit which is made by Fokker (the original GT2 arch manufacturer) which can be fitted with new sills to match (incidentally FVD say they have sold 200 of these kits to Porsche who used them for racing customers who wanted to put the arches on their narrow bodied RS's and RSR's)
I have the original GT2 magnesium centered wheels in 9" + 11" sitting snugly under the arches and Porsche's 000 044 500 02 suspension kit bacically GT2 road car retrofit kit (list price $12000 + fitting)
I didn't fit the front and rear GT2 spoilers, but use the stock rear and the turbos "S" front, in my eyes the car looks best like this. I will post some pictures when I work out how.

thanks guys.
Im actually now kind of serious about moving forward on this, so i need some help:
1) what changes need to be made to the the transmission/internals
2)what are the GT2 engine specs that are different from a normal twin turbo motor/brain - as i was offered a very nice TT engine from a low milage TT that had a very bad day.
3) Im thinking of not adding the body work for now... using it as a narrow 993 (Im a fan of the narrow, cleaner 993). I assume I need to add the rear spoiler to hold the intercoolers - is there any way to avoid this?
4) how else was the GT2 different? What suspension did porsche put on that?

Advice is welcome ... i dont want to build a monster. Also, if you think this is stupid and I should just go out and trade for a TT, then tell me.
My intended uses are moderate track use and weekend driver.

thanks,
=rob

Guys:

I believe, and this will take investigation, that you can order a 996TT with option code something like "X50" from Porsche Individual. This will provide you with the GT2 engine and tranny, but in the TT body configuration.

I'd be curious about the accuracy of this info.
Anyone verify this?

you could make it a non turbo and use a rsr engine and tranny, there is a fresh pair for sale on this sight. think of the throttle response, might look w/o a tail.

or you can take a tt and remove the front wheel drive.also remove other heavy stuff and blast off.
this is not hard i am told by rothsport, who would love to do such a project

The GT2 engine is the 993TT engine with the boost having been raised from 0.8 to 0.9 bar and remapping the fuel and ignition curves. There are also two oil coolers up front instead of one. There are some solutions to place the intercoolers on the side instead of on top for 993TTs, so it should be possible here too. If you have that much power, I think you should have a fixed wing. With the intercoolers on the side, you could go for the normal RS spoiler which is more discrete. BTW: the approach you are doing is similar to what Ruf has been doing for years - putting twin turbos into small bodied 911s.
