Last night I drilled out my airbox (thanks to the site for great resources!) and was anxious for the drive in this morning...I had actually forgot about it until I nearly arrived...no noticable increase or additional noise...I went all the way across so it looked exactly like this...

....looks like I'll have to try it at WOT...anyone want to clear the Merritt for me?

WOT is where you hear it but is the most dramatic effect when the Varioram opens up...you won't hear that with a '95.

I had a 95 993 and drilled mine exactly the way you did. It made what I thought was a "whine" type noise that sounded pretty cool vs stock. Biggest improvement was when I changed to the Maxflows.

Agree with the others. WOT is when you will hear it inside the car. BTW, I'm an ex Merritt Parkway driver as well.

YES, you hear it as 3/4 to WOT, its more of a low whistle, but it fits right in there with the cocophany of sounds behind you!

I have the Motorsound airbox and it was way too quite. So I drilled a bunch of 1" holes and it made BIG a difference in the sound.

Gotta agree with the others; drilled out my '95 and it makes a nice difference in WOT sound - music to my ears. No difference in peformance from what I could tell.

John, I have nota_troll's airbox with the "cut" sections in it and he's correct. Cut your hole sections right out, and you'll hear it just fine. I have a '95 and it sounds great under any power.

Is there any merit to the theory that the open filter will get wet or damaged more easily? I suspect that if you have some object rattling around in your engine compartment you have bigger problems than a damaged air filter, but still.

Anyone check their open filter after driving in the rain? Does it get wet?

I have a lot of faith in the Porsche designers in this area...people on this board whose opinion I respect have opined as such...I guess I'd be open to "Cuttin that B!tch" since that's how those same designers put together the Cup filters. But then again, mine is a daily driver...

I have a cut box (courtesy of a very nice Rennlister who sent me his old one when he supercharged). The filter doesn't get wet, and we have rain and snow here consistently.

The sound difference is pretty pronounced, even at very low RPM at part throttle. This is an everyday car, so that might or might not be a good thing, depending on my mood. In 90% of cases it is. Maybe 95% :-)
