Gear synchro replacement
Can anyone tell me what is involved in a synchro replacement? In other words, is it a $30 part with $3000 worth of labor? Price ranges would be great. This is for my cup car. My synchro of 2nd seems pretty bad....

Hey JM,
The parts are a little more expensive, and the labor less. This is what I paid:
2nd gear steel synchro $557.70
2nd gear steel cone $599.17
2nd gear steel ring $613.47
I don't know the labor for just fixing 2nd gear, as I had a whole bunch of stuff done at the same time. Taking a wild guess, I'd put the labor charge between $1k ~ $1.5k.

The second gear synchro is the most expensive one. I believe my mechanic told me it was $1500 for the three piece steel one, that goes right along with what DJ said. The other synchros are not near as expensive less that $200 each.
If you need you box rebuilt send me an email off list and I will get you my mechanics number, you could ship your tranny to him for the repair.

Thanks Greg. David Murry will drive my car this week-end (Road Atlanta) and I guess that I will know a whole lot more by then...
Anyway, I think that I will try to stick with Autometricsmotorsports, they have done very good work for me and I'd rather have 1 person in charge than having to remove the box and then reinstall myself. The funny bit is that Franz Blam racing is less than 20 min from where I live and I'd like to try them because of the proximity but they have screwed up work on a friend's race car and Gordon at autometrics never screws anything up....
Anyway, I appreciate your help though.

JM,
If I am not mistaken both of those outfits have sent gear boxes to my mechanic when they couldn't figure them out. Ask David Murry, he knows Brian Copans as he was one of the mechanics on the Rohr racing team when he won the World Challenge championship sometime in the mid nineties. I have heard some stories about F.B. as well. I am sure Gordon does good work, have never heard anything negative about them. There are a lot of small details that if overlooked when building a gear box will significantly reduce the life span of that box, my mechanic gets more hours out of at GT3R gear box than the original one that came from the factory gets. I was in his shop when he got a box from another well known race shop and the ring and pinion was set so poorly that in less than 4 hours it was severly worn. That was at a minimum a $1500 part gone because of bad installation. I have seen him spend hours setting the backlash just right as it is a tedious job. He actually wants to do less transmissions and more car prep, so he probably wouldn't be happy with me tooting his horn in this forum.
EJ,
Not sure why the price difference but the 2nd gear synchro has three pieces, I will ask why the difference next time I talk with my mechanic.
