Solution to OT Problem...
Fellow 993 heads...
After giving several nano-seconds of thought to the OT dilemma, I have devised a plan which I believe will fit the needs of this sacred board...I hope John (the Porshist) will agree
Taking the non-cardinal number 150, steeped in 911 lore, we do the following:
...those whose age plus IQ is over 150 remain on the original 993 board...
...those whose age plus IQ is less than 150 will have a new board called 993.alt...
This should take care of everybody's problems, ie., satisfy the older more traditional 911 purists and the more contemporary young bucks (no pun intended)...

So here is a bit more serious commentary about OT - my $0.02:
I like the conversations that lead to OT comments - that helps define this place as a community. Also, as a community, the 'rules' are fuzzy and change over time and with changes in community membership.
What has differentiated this board from many others, is that OT comments have historically come WITHIN on topic threads. There have been some exceptions, but generally at the rate of one every few weeks. What we have not is a period where the community is generating many OT threads each week.
I recall us going through this cycle a few times in the past, and we have done just fine. What seems to happen is this -
A number of new members join the community (active participation). They are enthusiastic about the cars and people and create more banter and OT threads as they try to learn about the other members. Sometimes I participate in OT threads, sometimes I don't. Note that even Ray can not seem to resist participating, in his own way, in order to define his role in the community (but I am from the land of fruits and nuts, so what would I know).
This move to more OT content drives many of the strong contributors into hibernation. The technical value of the board goes down, for a while.
The newest group slows down - both because it is no longer new and quite so exciting, and becuse the technical content has dropped, which is why they are really here in the first place. They probably get some 'guidance' via private messages from others, as well.
The 'old timers' get more active, as the board has settled down and the newbies start to become 'old timers'.
We are back to ALMOST where we started. The ALMOST is the important part, as we have evolved the board into a better place for the current community.
This is a good and productive process and our ability to get through these cycles on our own is a sign of the strength of this community and the maturity (regardless of age) of the memebers.

I was going through an old box of stuff the other day and found a 1977 Porsche catalog...the first words written inside are, "In a world of compromise, Porsche doesn't."...when I wrote previously that "911 cars deserve 911 people," what many of us older 911 people are about is what 911's are (were) about, ie., no compromise...whether you were a doctor, lawyer or Indian Chief, those who loved 911's were those who stretched the envelope in whatever they did...911's were made for those who "understood" and lived that understanding...respecting these cars means everything...that means you don't use it as a dragster as you have nothing to prove...just as you would not chug a $300. bottle of wine, nor make your wife the centerpiece of a gang affair, you treat these cars with the dignity and respect they deserve...
Porsche AG is now building very different cars because people are different...no longer do most Porsche customers care about the old virtues...it's about compromise and cup holders...I thought the 993 board would be full of purists, those unwilling to give up the 911 ideal...well, there are cirtainly some here, and some that I have learned a great deal from, but with the new emphasis on chest pounding and picture taking (it's not like we all don't own one of these!), I haven't learned a damn thing in months...
I will be quiet now as my zen side is ready to take over from my anarchist side (it's one hell of a battle
)...sorry if I've offended anybody here but it's just the way I am

Hey ZMC2S...
What happened? Did your local blockbuster already rent out their only copy of GRUMPY OLD MEN..
Well since you haven't learned anything in months, here's something you can write down..
There is a sequal.. Grumpier Old Men..
P.S. My car doesn't have any cup holders...
But I wish it did.. That way I would have someplace to put my Rasberry Frappuccino

Lonn,
I'll possibly regret saying this in the morning, but your post was probably the most offensive, negative, un-constructive thing I've ever read on this forum. But it was typical of occasional posts I've seen on other types of forums. A cry out for others to wallow in negativity.
Well I for one don't buy your premise or share any of your views.

Neither age nor IQ, alone or together, prove wisdom, good judgment or basic social skills, nor is the lack of either the cause of real or perceived Board problems. Witness your post, which was needlessly divisive, counterproductive and ill-advised, albeit tongue in cheek.

How about a pictures forum for those of us who enjoy such things? Pictures such as those recently posted by pin are great, and really make my day.
Regarding the size of the images, is it possible to create an image link using the UBB codes? That is, have a 640x480 or smaller image in the post that links to something larger?
Cheers,
