Post Inside Windshield Coating

Guys,

I bought an Escort 8500 radar detector for my car. I'm going to try and permanently mount it, but I may end up using the Escort provided "suction cup to the windshield set-up".

There is a caution in the 8500's operating manual that says "A few vehicles (including some Porsches) have windshields with a soft anti-lacerative coating on the inside surface. Use of suction cups will permanently mar this coating." This is the first time I've heard of this.

Can anyone verify if its safe to use these suction cups on the inside of the windshield? I have removed my registration and NYS inspection stickers with a razor blade and never noticed a coating on the inside of the windshield.

Any help would be appreciated.

Been using suction cups for over 2 years without a problem.

If it really bothers you, you can mount it on the visor. But you should be fine with using the suction cups anyways. For a slick installation, you should consider hard wiring it.

Having a cord dangle out of the cig lighter is so unprofessional.

Jeff,
Thanks. Hard wiring is the way to go, that's true. Problem is a location to mount that is out of the way and has a 'hard point' to attach to. I may look at above the rearview mirror and have a mount fabricated.

Thanks for the info on the suction cups.

I hardwired using the instructions from Robin's site www.p-car.com and just suction cup it right above the rear view mirror and think it looks pretty good. The DIY was quite easy, just took a little time.

Good Luck.

I had the same question when I bought my Escort about the windsheild, I was told by a Porsche rep that the anti lacerative stuff didn't start until 996/Boxster era.

Though mine isnt an Escort I have found this is be the best place to put my radar. I have had no problems with the visors and I think it looks better then putting above the rearview mirror. I also hid the wire to where it looks OEM..This is a side view but from where you sit you see no mires and no suction cups

It does not look like the radar will work above the rear view, IMO, because it is too high to pick up the signal behind you.

Ok, who wants to build a custom rear view mirror where a V1 fit inside? I'm not talking about just the display, but the entire unit.

I think that would make for a very clean installation.

As Chris said, several threads have addressed this issue.

I think radar technology is going to have to get a bit more compact before the entire radar will fit...but Im sure it will happen sometime soon..

1. No affect on sensitivity of the rear sensor.
2. I like it above the mirror because it can barely be seen from outside the car and does not impact vision.
