Mike, my statement was really driven by the experiences I have had first hand with people trying to track 996's. I have seen many suspension components fail (shocks, springs, and arms), I have seen 4 transmissions fail and I have seen 6 engines completely stop working. In most of these situations expereinced track shops that saw these indicated that the parts were not of the quality that the previous 911's had been. They felt that most of the components needed to be upgraded to get to the 993 starting point. That was their opinion not mine but I tend to agree.

My 993 has been tracked in either auto-x or DE/TT now for 5 years (got it on Nov 1997). I have not had one failure of anything in the car. I also find that with the exception of suspension, which I upgraded, the parts on the street cars are very close to the parts used for the cup cars of that year making it very easy to run this car like the cup cars. Todays street Porsche's are nothing like the GT3, GT3R, or GT3RS. In order to get them there would take quite a lot of $$$. Not the case for the 993 IMHO.

Porsche has had some real issues with their cars (996 and Boxster), there are some real upset people out there. There are also a much higher volume of cars being produced which has alot to do with the quality and part selection. Strange that the cars still cost more and more every year though.

Anyway, those are my experiences and I find the 993 to simply be a great, reliable, easy to race car with some small modifications. I haven't seen the same to be true of the 996.

Hope I do not ruffle and feathers, that is not my intent.

Maybe I'm the one with the magic beans because I have gone to 10 DE's this year and going on 11 this coming weekend. How often do you track your car? I sure wish I could do more but once a month is all I can do. Great fun!!! Regards. Mike

I miss my 996. I love my 993. What do i miss about the 996? Leg room. Engine whine. HVAC. One touch controls, long road trips (smooth), trunk storage, 18" techno rims.
What I dont miss... Rattles, obtrusive center console that digs into your calf muscle leg area (fibia?), cornering, clicking clutch, basketball dash, boxster front end, depreciation.

What do I love about the 993... Pure Porsche characteristics at a refined level. Body curves, Ergonomics/gauges, torque, cornering, seats & dash, overall performance, upgrade possibilities...

What I dont really like... Leg room (I'm 6'1") especially passenger side, squeaky brakes (fixable).

They are both sweet cars. Yes i would love to have both. I will have a 996 again. For now I'm loving the 993. You're golden either way!

Ah, leg room in the 993. I Sat shotgun in mine for the first time today. With the seat all the way back my legs are still bent like 30-40 degrees. I was planning on diging under the floormat to see if the PO put a subwofer in there or something.

Are you teling me this is *normal*??

Yes.it is normal. It's pretty bad too. I heard you can reset the seat aprox. 1/2" back (which should help a few degrees) otherwise...forget it!

You guys know you can mount the seat assembly to the rear over an inch? I'm 6'4, and now I'm pretty comfortable. Moving it back makes a big difference, especially on the passenger side. All you do is unbolt the rails, and slide the seat back till the next set of holes line up, and rebolt.
