Although I might have missed something in the thread, why are the 4300 putting out more light than the 4500. Am I reading this incorrectly?
Please let me know before I pull the trigger and make the purchase.
Thanks,
Michael

From a HID info page-

Color- The major difference is in found in the bulbs. Hid- Fog Lights run at 5400k and Stage 2 bulbs run at 6000k and are composed of a gas mixture that emits a very Blue hue, Versus a Stage 1 kit, which run at 4300k, and emit a very WHITE light. The Stage 1 kits are the same lights and OEM color in BMW & Lexus this color give you the MOST LUMENS (light output). The stage 2 system is the same exact system found on the European Le man Race cars. This system eclipses any other automotive lighting system in color on the market today. Nothing can even match the light color. Stage 2 is much more BLUISH hue than Any BMW, Mercedes, or popular luxury car on the market.

So, the farther up you go from 4300k you get a bluer tint to the light but less actual light output. How much of a diff from 4300k to 4500k?? most likely, not much. Where did you see a 4500k kit?

I have a high beam question: Is this the best type for my car -
Sylvania H1STTWIN Twin Pack; High Beam; Silverstar High Performance Halogen? Is this the "right one"? They have this at Advance Auto for $37 for the 2 pack, and it's only 2 blocks from my house (Walmart isn't close to me at all). Joe from Alexandria has kindly offered to help me install the HID light kit and recommended the high beams upgrade ... are these the best high beams for my car? Any downside, like they get too hot and melt things ?

Thanks in advance,
Steve

Silverstars are good. Nice and bright.

They are 55W bulbs (standard rating). I have them and it's a world of difference from the "normal" halogens (not yellow, brighter, "crisp" even!).

As you're going the HID route, I'm sure you'll feel let down by whatever halogen bulb you put in the high beam position!!!... But I'd go for them... I think they come out tops in most peoples reviews...

My $0.02

Clive.

Based on what I read, I would recommend: http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/H1_osram.htm

Free shipping fron UK and they appear to be a better match with the HID's as they don't have the blueish tint the US "HID like" bulbs have. I havn't received mine yet, (10-14 days from UK) so can't make a direct comparison. They are priced more competitively as well.
I also don't think a blueish bulb looks very good in the lamp, doesn't quite fit the character of the car, giving it more of a "rice look"

Thanks, Clive... Can't wait to get them and really SEE at night. So many times as I'm driving at night I think, "are my lights even on?"

Thanks Jeff. I'll look into these UK bulbs instead then.

Are the only two piece (igniter/ballast) units left the Phillips ones?

I'm interested in doing the Catz-type "factory-look" install that still allows the headlights to be slid in and out vs. permanently connecting the power through the 1" hole.

As far as I know Philips know longer makes the 2 peice kits. I know there are still some companies making them here is a link to one http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=36476 A search on ebay for HID conversions will yeild more. The problem is finding 4300k H1 based bulbs. Most of these conversion kits are 6000k+ color tempature. Also in the world of HID the 2 peice kits are looked at as an older technology. Hope this helps.

Thank you kkim. I am glad that you are happy with your lights. Right before I read this thread I was on my way to pick up litronics OEM used for $1100 bucks.

The kit that I bought (the one everyone else bought too), is there any hardwiring or cutting of factory plugs necessary? It might be explained somewhere else in the thread, but my understanding is that I can still remove my headlamp, correct? Thanks so much again for all the great info.

What a load of bull. The fact is, the "bluer" your light, the more backscatter you'll get in poor visibility conditions. You'll also note that at LeMans, many cars run with yellow beams - probably HID lights with yellow filters. That is for less glare and better visibility in the rain and fog.

Ok - I'm READY! Anyone up for a Washington DC/Va/Md HID install day or half day? I know, I know - I should probably start a new thread about it if I want it to happen. Joe was going to help me when he became available, but now that I have all the parts, it's hard to wait it out!

My father always told me that patience is a virtue, but it's a hard axiom to live by when you're a "Toy's R Us Kid" like myself...

Yeah, I'd be up for a mailed video or a DVD with step by step shots in high resolution close-up - kind of a "HID 993 install for idiots". Reading instructions on a piece of paper won't help me much. I'm DIY challenged!
