Post Waaay OT: What a great coffee table book about the McLaren F1

"Driving Ambition: The Official Inside Story of the McLaren F1" by Doug Nye with Ron Dennis and Gordon Murray; 1999 by Virgin Books.

One of the most interesting and beautifully illustrated hardcover books about an automotive subject that I've ever seen. It's full of Gordon Murray's original design and engineering sketches and notes, including an awesome Murray college notebook drawing of the basic 3-person layout and frontal view from 1969! Twenty-five years later, he realized his dream.

It will be interesting to see if the Carrera GT or Ferrari Enzo can displace this incredible engineering achievement from its throne.

Looks like a fascinating book to have for car nuts like us! This month's Road & Track has a cover story where they compare the McLaren F1, Ferrari F40, Porsche 959, and an F-18F Hornet. Lucky author got to drive/ride in all 4 (well, he didn't "drive" the jet...).

The end of each segment has a "my pulse at the end of the drive: x bpm."

To think one could get paid to do that... <img src="graemlins/bigok.gif" border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" />

There is also a decent McLaren F1 story in the most recent Roundel, for those in the BMW club...

I know you're into performance upgrades, could this book mean you're considering a slightly more expensive than usual one?

I've only seen one F-1 on the street, but that was in Aspen.

Chris and Jack,

Those two interesting articles in R&T and Roundel actually prompted me to buy this book.

Mike,

Hope you're doing well. "If I could, I surely would..."

Couple more books that might be of interest - more on a historical basis:

"Driven" by Jesse Alexander. Compilation of Jesse Alexander's photos of Euro auto racing events from the '50's and early '60's.

"Stirling Moss - the Authorised Biography" by Robert Edwards. Interesting story; of even more interest are the gigantic inclusion of photos.

A friend gave me that book a few years ago, and I love it. It's proudly on display in my office at home. I believe that a leather bound version was produced in limited quantities, which was "free" with the purchase of the F1.

Hi Anir,

I totally agree with you on that book. I saw it at a local bookstore near my house and I was very impressed

Along a similar line, here's a DVD that I highly recommended

Hey Pin,

Thanks for the advice. I just added it to my Amazon cart, which is always accumulating goodies.

Happy Holidays to you too.
