100 Octane Unleaded in San Diego, at the pump, yes...

Thanks for the response Viken! So, I guess the consensus is bring it up to 93. BTW someone asked how you get a blend. You can either calculate it out or, for the mathematically challenged like me, Union 76 will give you a little card (like those tip cards) with ratios for your desired blend.

I have to repeat this message... Union 76 is OUT of the racing gas biz, at least here in California. Its gone; zippo, bupkis, nada. There are still a few independents that have it available at the pump. My closest one is now in the San Fernando Valley, near Victory and Canoga. Not exactly sure where, I follwed Scott Mellor out there once.

Ok gang, I just filled up with 100 proof at the 76 on Bundy and San Vicente in west LA so . . . some still serve the hard stuff. How long is anyone's guess. Right near you Gordon, Sr.
Great link Viken. A genuine thank you for that. A recommended read for all who want to learn about fuel.

Err... So why is the Norco 76 still selling 100 octane as of 9:30pm this evening?
Are you *sure* that 76 doesn't sell 100? Seems that a few members here are still buying it at 76 stations as recently as today....

Sorry, I am going by the word of the 76 station in Agoura that stopped selling 100 octane almost 6 months ago. He said it was because 76 was not making it anymore. I've also heard others report that 76 is out of the race gas biz... at least in California. The difference may be... the Agoura station is owned and operated by Union 76, not an independent. Is it possible that some of the other 76 stations are indepedently owned, and getting their race gas from some other refiners? If that is the case... you are lucky. For me, its now way harder to find race gas.

You guys have been talking about this all within the context of DE or competition events. For everday "spiritied" driving, should I be seeking out the 100 octane? The best I've found at Chevron is 91 (it has techron mixed in).

You're lucky you have 91. Here in Cali . . . never mind. The general consensus, at least from the likes of Viken and Tony Callas, who gave a fabulous talk a few weeks back and addressed this exact issue is, surpassing the Porsche tuned and required 93 octane is worthless for a stock naturally aspirated car, but bringing up standard pump gas to the 93 mark, via blending, makes for a happier, cleaner burning 993 NA engine. Thus the recommendation is to up the octane levels to the appropriate 93 mark for all driving.

. . . with Techron mixed in.
" . . . with Techron mixed in." which brings up another interesting issue, probably for a separate post but, due to the overall detergent effect, Tony Callas recommeded against routine use of Techron additives and gas, rather recommending bringing your fuel up to the specified 93 level.
Very interested to know Viken's opinion on Techron. From what I, and quite a few other Rennlisters always believed, Techron was mana from heaven in helping to keep the engine clean and SAI carbon demons at bay. Viken?
