Talking Turbo cars spoil you...

I had one (1) ride in a 993TT, a bone stock one at that. Then I had to get into my NA 993 car...what a let down. That has been about two (2) years...I have vowed, NEVER ride in a TT car again. It leads to an intense dissatisfaction with the status quo.

If I promised wifey 0 mods on a TT car, I wonder if she'd buy into a TT in our garage...the trouble is...she knows better.

If you are in Huntington Beach you can buy 100 gas at the car wash (no kidding) on the corner of Yorktown and Beach Blvd. Get about five gallons and then fill it up with the regular dish water. I am given to understand that you have to run several tanks through in a variety of driving conditions to give the ecu time to "learn" that it has a higher average gasoline mix, this in a 996TT.

Who told you that, Garey? The ECU has nothing to learn with regards to octane. The only relation octane has with electronics is a knock sensing device which is programmed to detect detonation and retard timing and turbo boost. If your car is calibrated for optimum performance with 93 octane, there is no benefit from using anything higher than that.

Boy, you guys in SanDiego really pay the price. I can get pump CAM2 and 110 octane for 4.XX a gallon. And I too have heard not to use Avgas, its for planes not cars. Wish I could ship 110 to Cali....could make a killing

I get 100 octane in Fullerton CA at a 76 station right by Aase motors. Was there today and still see the 100 pump.

Its 4.00 per gal

Viken, as I understand it the ecu does take some time to adapt to different conditions. That is it sets ignition timing "on the fly" and it does this by measuring up to the point of pre-ignition (knocking or pinging or even as they say in England "pinking"). And that one of the terms in the formula is obviously time, it takes time to move the ignition curve along based upon the knock feedback. This is why people often have to drive thier cars around a bit after major changes. Maybe we can ask one of the tuning bards to chime in on the subject? I'd like to hear more opinions. Incidentally I would agree that ultimately there is nothing to gain by going too far past the optimum program settings in your ecu; stock or modified.

Where is the Fullerton gas station that sells 100 octance? I work in Anaheim a figurtive hop, skip, and a jump from Fullerton. I would like to know where this emporium is located?

My butt dyno told me right as I pulled away from the station. Maybe because my wallet was thinned down.

check out this 76 page.

http://www.76.com/products/76racing.asp

Phone number to find your nearest Racing 100 fuel station is 1-800-345-0076

Seems like there's a station in Norco close to me!

That detail is hard to figure out from the 76 site (trawling though their station list is painful).

Also found this list of 76 stations on another forum (check first!)

1: 28203 DOROTHY DR AGOURA
2: 10951 E IMPERIAL HWY NORWALK
3: 8300 LINCOLN BLVD LOS ANGELES
4: 150 S CITRUS AVE WEST COVINA
5: 2390 HUNTINGTON DR SAN MARINO
6: 12037 SAN VICENTE BLVD. LOS ANGELES
7: 11675 W. PICO BLVD. LOS ANGELES
8: 2807 HAMNER AVE. NORCO
9: 2690 SAN MIGUEL DR NEWPORT BEACH
10: 2160 S EUCLID AVE ONTARIO
11: 17849 VENTURA BLVD ENCINO
12: 3010 ALMADEN EXPRESSWAY SAN JOSE
13: 1063 PACHECO BLVD. LOS BANOS
14: 28013 ARNOLD DR SONOMA
15: 13300 E LIVEOAK AVENUE IRWINDALE
16: 2072 W. YOSEMITE MANTECA
17: 881 N. GOLDEN STATE BLVD. TURLOCK
18: 2026 N. TEXAS STREET FAIRFIELD
19: 155 E GLENARM ST PASADENA
20: 16719 LAKEWOOD BLVD BELLFLOWER

Also, the 76 page has a good set of tables to show what your mix should be (the top row is the 100 octane stuff (their web page colors are off!)

Hope that helps.

Of course it would if you were running 91 and filled-up with some 100. Had you been running 93 or better, you'd have felt no difference.

Yes, Garey. It takes time for the ECU to adapt to different conditions, but not in the case of octane changes. As I indicated to Terry above, going from 91 octane to any number above 93 will make an almost immediate difference in engine performance assuming the engine was tuned for 93 octane which is the case with these cars.

So our 993s say on the gas cap 93 octane...So I am curious what the ecu is tuned for.

93 could be the minimun but the car could run best with 94 or 93 1/2 or some number. Is there a way to find out or is it all butt dyno.

Could the ecu be backwards engineered for that info?

Hmmm

93 octane is all the engine needs for optimum performance. Anything more is a waste and anything less would retard ignition timing. Now, if you want to have someone re-write the software for gasoline of higher than 93 octane, that would be an entirely different story.

Viken...sounds good to me. Curious, how did you find the optimum number?

Thanks

Viken, as one who seems to know a lot about our cars and their needs: Do you reguarly blend gas due to our limited choices here in Los Angeles or do you just go with the higest octane available at the pump?

Not anymore. But, I did it for as long as I owned the 993 and drove it during the hot summer months. That car pinged notoriously during those times and the reduced performance was very obvious. With my current cars, I do not notice a difference and I certainly don't hear any pinging. As such, I no longer feel the need.
