Did my first porsche club track day today - Totally fantastic want to do more (and have booked more) but one small problem, they wouldn't let my 993 on so had to do the day in my M3 (E46) - which incidently really kicked *** on the track.
Why?
Because my RSR's were too loud! My local track (Castle Combe, Wiltshire UK) has a 100db limit on quiet days, took my 993 down last weekend for check - tested at 100.2db so they said it should have been OK, today it checked at 104db first test, and 102 at the next two (long runs on the motorway to heat it up in between tests to try and get the noise down!) result - not allowed on the track!! I love the sound of the RSR's but if they stop me doing track days ...... (especially since I have just got the M3 as my daily driver and moved the '993 to track day weapon status)Any ideas on getting the noise down? Or anyone want to swap for standard mufflers (i am in the UK)?
TIA
John

DJF1 - Absolutely, got them from Gert last year and have done about 5-6K on them, don't get me wrong I love the sound of them they are fantastic, just want to do track days with my baby and here in the UK the do gooders - in this case the local council with a noise limit on the track - have even started to nobble our track day fun, I'm surprised that they don't put a speed limit on the track - or maybe that will be next

I'd be willing to swap, but you'd have to be willing to send me yours, let me change them out on my car, and send you the stock mufflers...as my car is a daily driver.
Also, the shipping cost & import tax would have to pan out...
...let me know if you want to investigate.

Just curious, do you UK'ers have catalytic converters?
I remember Silver Bullet getting black flagged at Laguna with RSR's, but it was a bad reading (92 db limit).
I just can't imagine RSR's putting out that much db's. Before I went to Laguna, I took the supercups off and put the RSR's on. I was not black flagged, but Kim was.

John,
Before you remove your RSR's, try re-installing your engine under
tray as well as re-installing the stock air box. This will result in lower
sound levels that could qualify your RSR's. Also, you can
purchase a low cost dB meter at Radio Shack. These low cost
meters are surprisingly accurate, even when compared to studio
recording standards. Using these meters takes practice and
experience to make accurate measurements, including the use
A/B/C frequency weighting and slow/fast response times.
It is possible the individual administering your sound test was
not using it correctly.

Engine undertray is in place, I do have the motor sound air box cover (genuine porsche) (i will try replacing it with the original) the sound test was carried out with the meter approx 10 - 12 " from the exhaust tips (they have an extendable car aerial thingy attached to the meter which touches the tips at one end and the meter at the other) the reading is taken with the engine pulling a steady 4500 rpm. The guys at the track are really helpful and its only 30 mins from my house - hence why I want to fix the problem so i can take a car full of goddies down and try there with the track meter.
Some of the older cars without the oval tips were running with what looked like auxilliary mufflers bolted onto the end of the round exhaust pipe! can you get these for oval tips?
I would like to keep the RSR's if at all possible!

Just goes to show how crowded our tiny little island is that they have to measure the sound so tightly and legislate to keep the track quiet - The nearest housing areas to castle combe circuit are about a mile or so away - maybe I should move to wales or scotland.
FYI my 6 week old BMW M3 with a stock exhaust was 90db at 4.5k rpm so that shows how tight it is, what chance have I got with the rear engine whirring away and the RSR singing beautifully
Any of the other British rennlist members got any perspectives on this? What are the noise limits at Brands or Silverstone or Bedford or any other track?
Anyone in the UK got any clever ideas on how I can deal with the sound issue?
TIA
John

Hi John,
I've got Gert's RSRs on my car and they don't seem a huge amount louder than the standard exhausts. It might be worth comparing with another set of RSRs as you may have got a loud pair? If you want to make the trip I'm happy to provide the comparison set on my 95 C4.
Cheers,
David

Cheers

I had a similar problem at Bedford (measured 101.2dB @ 0.5m), see this thread: <a href="http://forums.rennlist.com/forums/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=005382#000000" target="_blank">RSR Muffler noise test figures</a>
At Bedford they also have a drive-by figure, which is more easily passed, so I got to drive - but I'm pretty sure the car has got a little louder since that test. Remember to dip your clutch during the noise test, drops the level slightly, but I don't think you have a hope of hitting a 100dB limit with the RSR's fitted. You might find some alternative tail pipes would allow the auxiliary silencers you saw at Castle Combe to be fitted, Cargraphic do some that are straight pipes. Otherwise std rear boxes will be required.
