Harness Recall

Harness Recall
I just spoke with my dealer again and now they are telling me that while my '95 falls within the affected range it does not show up the voice response system Porsche set-up for the harness issue. They said if the VIN isn't confirmed by the Voice Respose system they aren't suppose to inspect/replace it.
Anyone heard of this?
Thanks,

UPDATE:
I just got a call back from the dealer and he spoke with the District Service Manager. He was told that they have not finished loading all the data into the VRS and was told to re-check next Monday (11/11).

Buck, When you mention voice responce system that Porsche set up...does this mean it is a number that we,as Porsche owners, can call and check if our VIN number is listed. If so what is the number. I have been waiting for this issue to settle down a little bit before I hit the local dealer. Thanks

Why don't you give us your vin number and build date and let a few of us who might have a guess try? You could also remove the plastic cover over the wiring connections box in the engine bay and read the build date and design date for the harness. It's all outlined in my site.

When I called the local dealer, they were aware of the recall letter, but told me to wait until I get a personal offical recall letter from Porsche.
So, I called the other nearby dealer (Beverly Hills Porsche in Santa Monica), they checked my vin number immediately and told me that my car's (MY 95) vin # falls within the range and told me to bring the car in for inspection. At this point he gave no guarantee that my wiring harness will be replaced. But, he said he will ordered the wiring harness anyway. This was about a week ago. I called the dealer today and found out that the part has arrived....good news.
Now, here's the interesting part. Since I have to drive ~ 1hr. or more pending LA traffic to get to the dealership and pending inspection, there's a potential that my wireing harness may not be replaced, I asked him if I can speak to the mechanic (he used work on my boxter). Make the long story short, upon speaking to my mechanic, I found out the following info. that may be useful to the rennlisters.
He said if you have any following wiring harness part #, it's an AUTOMATIC replace.
993 607 016-0001, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08 or 80. Mine ends w/ 05. Anyhow, he told me to come in this coming Friday to get mine replaced. I will post the results.
By the way, when I called the PCNA, they told me that there's no record of recall according to my vin #. ....strange.

Interesting since every harness I have heard of ends in a 01, 04 (rare) and 05. Funny part is that the new ones end in 05 too.
Out of about 50 cars I have records for, only 2 have part numbers that end in 00, one is the earliest (car #238) and one is the middle of the run (car #3584). Every other part number ends in the other three numbers - including those that have been inspected and don't have a problem, and stranger still, those of us who have put new ones in our cars already, the new ones end in 05 - every one.
Strange.

As a data point, my harness was just replaced under the recall. My car was an early build, with a VIN of 22406. I don't have the part number of the old harness, but i sent it to EJ for his data base. If i recall correctly, at that tim, EJ reported that my part number was not one of the bad ones. Also, last night I looked at the new harness and down low on the left side in the engine compartment there were 2 connectors loose dangling away. I don't recall the old one having extra unused connectors. Anyone know if the harness is supposed to have some unused connectors? The car runs fine, so there is no obvious problem.

Hi E.J.,
I think I’m the one exception to that rule. My old harness was an 01, and so is my replacement. I’m a little concerned about this, but not much. One of the key pieces of information (as you’re aware) is the “Fert Datum,” or build date, printed on the harness tag. My old harness had a build date of March ’94, and my new harness has a build date of May 2000. I’m hoping this means that my replacement harness is made from the new materials.
According to my PET CD, the 01’s are for ‘94’s (M64.07/08) (apparently early US ‘95’s fall into this category, as that’s what mine is (option code 718)), the 05’s are for 95’s (M64.07/08 again) and the 15’s are for the 96+ cars (M64.23/24). The only other numbers listed on the PET CD are 10, 11 and 12, and I believe these are for ROW cars (they all list engine number M64.60).
Since 01 is the listed part number, and my new harness has a recent build date, I’m not too concerned. Perhaps I’ll take it to the dealer once I get my letter. Has anyone actually received a letter? I’ve heard of a couple harnesses being replaced under this program, but I think the went to the dealer before getting the letter.

When I replaced my harness I noticed that there was an extra connection adjacent to the starter solenoid terminals.
Turns out it was for the manual transmission version (I have a Tip)for the backup lights. The Tip gets its signal from the selector switch on the LEFT side of the tranny.
I couldn't bring myself to cut ANYTHING off my brand-new $450 harness so I just taped it up and zip-tied it out of the way.
So far, so good.

The elusive option code 718 rears it's head at last. I have been searching for 2 years for the meaning of this code. How did you figure it out Tom?
As for the harness, I don't think you have anything to worry about.

I learned about it on this elusive, but excellent, Porsche board called Rennlist.

Sorry for the smart *** remark, now for the serious answer, here’s the thread:
<a href="http://forums.rennlist.com/forums/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=3&t=004895" target="_blank">Option Code 718???</a>
What I don’t know is when 718 got dropped, e.g. what was the last number ’95 to have it.
