Default Powder coat or paint wheel

Hi, I have looked around the forum and couldn't find a definitive answer to my question, hope I can get some good advice.
I really want to have the center portion of my wheel in Black (I think it will go well with the speed yellow).
What is the recommended way of doing this? Powder coating or painting?
Any idea on cost?
Also what are the recommended places in So CAl? Wheel enhancement?

Thanks in advance.

Send the wheels up to Al Reed Polishing in W. Anaheim, CA for powder coating. This is the premier spot for have wheels done, in my experience. Wheel Enhancement has a great reputation too.

If you call Al Reed, ask for the Feather Merchants Discount +1 (714) 632-3907 If you and Al strike up a deal. I am even be able to drop off the wheels for you...I drive right by his place about once a week. Note I receive no renumeration or compensation for mentioning Al Reed Specialty Polishing. I have know the guy for 15 years and he runs a great business.

On cost.......keep in mind you will have expence of dismount, disassemble, assemble, remount, balance.........I'll guess all that will come close to paint & clear cost.

Others will say powder is more durable........probably is.........personally I have several sets with painted/cleared centers..............good success here.....I have a good shop & believe the clear they use is either urathane based or have has flex agent added. It's soft and takes a time to set up.

Good luck w/the project......nice looking car........black is a good move

GreggT,
who do you use around Madison? I have 4 very nasty Fiske's that need cleaning/polishing/coating.

Nope.......no polishing here, at least not for me......they've prepped & painted.........I take them new wheels I've bought from Fikse or HRE (3 sets so far.......plus they also painted the hollows for the Turbo)......Gray Bahl Auto Body, refferenc my name..........Kelly Moss Motorsports does the reassemble.

Thanks Martin for the info.
I will call Al and discuss this with him.
The cost seems ok and Anaheim is much closer than Torrance.

If you like black, some aftermarket wheel manufacturers are doing Teflon coatings...very cool graphite look...no firsthand experience with scratch resistance (other than having scratched the hell out of my frying pans)

Another good color you might want to consider for the center of the wheels is Porsche Stone Grey Metallic. It goes well with Speed Yellow. It matches the color of the shifter, e-brake handle, door sills, dash trim rings. My speed yellow C2S came with a set of wheels with centers painted that color.

As far as paint vs. powder coat; I think it would be pretty hard to touch up a scratched or chipped powder coated wheel.

Although only an amateur PS job, this is SY with dark grey (looks somewhat blue) wheels.

I called Al to powdercoat a DAS rollbar and my old 17" cup wheels (that I am now keeping due to my addiction here). He was very helpful and will be doing the work. Any thoughts on what color I should powdercoat the wheels? Black/grey/silver? How about the DAS bar. The car is black on Polar Silver. Thanks Martin for the contact and thanks for any ideas!!!
