Gurgling sound on startup
When I start up my 993 C2 from cold, I get a gurgling sound coming from the engine for about 3 - 5 mins. It doesn't happen when starting the car from warm. Is this normal for a 993??
Car is a 1994 model with 69k (miles) on the clock
Thanks
Eric

It is normal, the catalytic converter is getting up to its operating temperature. You should notice water coming out of the tail pipes. This is a by product. When you have a warm start the catalytic converter is probably close to temp. If you should ever start smelling sulfer, or rotten eggs get you converter checked. (Starting to get plugged) Good luck

Hi Eric,
That "gurgling sound" is coming from the air pump running. The air pump is used to help control emmissions, and is activated when the car starts and the engine is cold. This sound is quite normal.
Here's a picture of the air pump.

Eric,
Try this quick and easy test to identify the sound of running air pump . . .
a/. With ignition in off position. Remove the relay (I believe, it's #2) for the air pump from relay panel in the left side of engine compartment.
b/. On relay panel, bridge terminals 87 (rear most) and 30 (front most) with jumper cable.
c/. The pump motor will start to run.
To my ear, the sound is more like whizzing (fuel pump like) and is only present during cold start when additional air is injected to induce faster heating of the three way catalytic converter.
