993Pet:

You will need to dig hard for one of these. You may find that the usual susgeested sources, such as Harald, have waiting lists for the ROW 6 speeds. I found that this was the case about a year ago when I was looking for mine.

Frankly, I would post a "wanted to buy" on sites like Rennlist and any other Porsche site and let the networking begin. This is how I eventually found one to purchase. (Thanks again Ken !)

FWIW, the ROW gearing is quite an improvement and worth the hassle of the 12+ hour install.

Regards

993PET,
If you decide to build your box to spec let me know and I can direct you to a top transmission guy in Cincinnati. Just email or PM me.

The upside of this is you can sell your stock box and recover some cost. The downside is that you do not know what you are getting really in terms of milaege on the box.

Regearing is a sure bet but it could be more expensive.

Choises choises choises... One thing is for sure:
Its the best more aside the suspension for our cars.

Regearing your existing transmission is about $1000 per gear (brass synchros). If you want to change 2nd gear it will cost more as for late model '95 and later cars both first and second are fixed on the main shaft and to re-do 2nd you need to replace the main shaft also (I think it was an extra $1500).

If you want steel sychros, they are a lot more money, especially for 2nd gear. When I had mine done I opted for brass as I was told by multiple sources that steel synchros are only critical in racing and especially enduro racing (and DE is a long way from that).

Kim: What ratios did you end up with in the YZ? Did you change second gear too? Rothsport is the shop that did my transmission too.

Steel Porsche Motorsports synchros are only marginally more expensive than brass. I think I was quoted $65 for brass and $135 for steel. Considering the overall cost, this was very little additional. The PM steel synchros have a bevel cut on the leading edge so that they engage easier. This means smoother shifting. I can tell the difference between the 3 steel and the 3 brass synchros in my box.

Cheers,

Re: steel synchros. The really expensive one is the second gear synchro. It is three pieces and cost around $1500. Ask Eric in Chicago if you can wear a stock synchro out doing DE's and what happens to second gear when it does.

2 Years ago i sold the Tranny for 3000 $ and got
3400 Euros , today i have to ask for 4000 $ to get 3400 Euros .

Synchros fail with track use, DE or not. Now I had many track miles but when the 2nd gear synchro went, 2nd gear was not far behind. You grind that gear a couple of times with out a synchro and you've got a problem. There is no way I would ever put brass synchros back into my trans. If anyone ever opens up their case, spend the extra 200.00 and go steel. For the real gory details, it let loose going into turn 5 at Road America, 145mph down to a 40mph turn in...

Another thought, if your ever even thinking of club racing your car, be aware that a G50/21 trans will move you up a class, take it from me, that is not what you want to do.
David, I assume you have much more sense than me and will never race you Cab.

Eric,
Didn't mean to jinx you. The 5th to 2nd gear shift takes some practice, doesn't it? Best thing to do is double clutch if you are going down into second gear (especially if you have brass synchros). I don't do this but I have the steel ones and they will wear out but it takes a lot longer for it too happen. This winter when I overhaul my gear box I will replace it as a preventative measure most likely.
The gearbox will bump you up a class but who has to know??

I was playing it safe Greg, working each gear down to 2nd but the sucker must have been too hot and too tired, the only thing worse than that grinding noise is the money shift...
re. Gearbox and class bump, the only guys that will know are ther ones with jack stands and a lift that ask me to pull my car into the tech shed... "Sorry Eric, we have a number for you and it is not 12..."
