Hydraulic tappets not infallible
Started up my '95 C2 and fast realised I had a bag of nails in the back! Tap - tap - tap, speed linked. Yeh a hydraulic tappet seal has gone.
I know which side of the engine it is but not top or bottom so I guess to be sure I will replace all of them , top/bottom. both sides. My mechanic says he has done a few so its not an odd event.
What a pain!! Just had 48,000 mile service too!!

It should be easy to determine whether top or bottom, though I'd put money on the exhaust side. It's the heat that kills these these things. I'd replace all three on the offending side, but NOT both upper and lower. Why crack open a valve cover gasket if you don't need to, unless it's leaking of course.
